The thing I've come to notice about the gay Republicans I know is that all of them, and I mean all of them, are "straight-passing"
Some legitimately care more about their identity as a conservative than that as a gay person
And they delude themselves into thinking that they will be accepted by heterosexual society
I had a conversation with the chair of the local chapter of the log cabin Republicans in my area and he said, to my face, that moms for liberty was not an anti-transgender hate group. Meanwhile, right behind me was a woman shouting about how the "alphabet mafia" was putting porn in school libraries.
The porn in question? #Pride
They delude themselves into thinking that, if they can be respectable enough, if they turn their backs on the TQ+ part of the community, maybe they'll be accepted amongst conservative society.
They never will. Not while one of the most active voting bloc in the GOP is white evangelicals.
No amount of self-loathing will convince someone like Scott Bottoms or Dave Williams that our community is one worth protecting.
They believe, in their hearts, that we are Sinners, mentally ill, and worse.
We can endeavor to change that, but as someone who has spent more time with these people than is probably psychologically healthy (I was assigned a beat on political extremism so what can you do).
So my message to the few gay Republicans is this: you will never be one of them.
You will never be "respectable" enough for them. You will never be someone whose civil liberties they care about.
Modern day American conservativism has been pushing anti-Queer dogma for generations. Just because Donald Trump doesn't hate gay people as openly doesn't make the GOP any less of a danger to LGBTQ+ rights.
Although the queer community now has more protections than we once did, that balance is fragile.
Anti-discrimination statutes meant to protect queer people are being eroded at a breakneck pace by the current Supreme Court (a conservative majority mind you).
They ruled that while states can dictate medical practice when it comes to denying gender-affirming care to trans people, they also ruled that states cannot set guidelines on providers of medical care who practice conversion therapy (i.e. the torture of queer people, especially youth).
Finally, I ask gay republicans: was it worth it?
Is it worth it to throw our community to the lions den of American conservatism in the name of your politics?
Since I have decided to vent my political frustrations on this website, it's wild to me that after all these years. Tumblr still somehow functions better as a social media platform than most out there.

And while I am on a political rant, I still believe that any person who identifies as queer who votes for a member of the GOP has betrayed our community. So long as Conservative Christrians are a voting bloc within the GOP, the queer community will never be safe under conservative administrations.

And beyond that, from an internationalist perspective the idea of borders is both antiquated and has not meaningfully been able to maintain national sovereignty unless you have the might of the American military.
Which at that point we're just enforcing via State violence. The maintenance of State via military or in this case a militarized force, while a longstanding tradition, is not actually a productive way of ensuring sovereignty or an ethical immigration system.
Yknow, anti-immigrant sentiment in the us, and really globally, is so pervasive right now. My theory is that it is somewhat a symptom of global climate change. As the planet has warmed, pushing people out of the Global South primarily, people have been forced to flee their countries of origin.
They come to countries they see as more stable, looking for what they hope to be opportunities, only to find that right-wing grifters have fomented a hatred of immigrants among workers.
And to be honest, some leftists have not helped in this regard. Some in Labor circles have fed into the narrative that immigrant labor is the enemy of the working class. It's disheartening to see as someone who works with a lot of hardworking people with a variety of immigration statuses.
The only way Labor can build a lasting coalition in this country is if we organize based on class. Dividing us by where we are born is exactly what those in power want because it keeps busy arguing amongst ourselves and we are then easier to defeat.

I think the thing about Heated Rivalry that has somewhat of a disconnect for me is, even though it was directed by a gay man, the source material was very much in the vain of the fetishization of gay relationships by straight women.
A huge chunk of gay media has been produced by and for straight female audiences and often minimizes the lived experiences of gay men.
Not saying you can't enjoy it, but it's hard for me not to see it as anything aside from like... softcore porn with the intent of appealing to women
