I think I finally understand why I dislike LO, and it's due to the lack of queerness. (as well as poor writing, poor character design and arcs and baffling changes to the family tree.)
Apollo, Hermes, Zeus, Poseidon, Dionysus, Aphrodite and MANY other gods are queer, it's kind of fundamental in Greek myth. it's understood and accepted but for some reason, Rachel Smythe erases any mention of queerness or cis-ness for that matter. Why...
Now when I say queerness I don't just mean Zeus taking male lovers or Artemis and Callisto, I mean fundamentally, at its core, Greek myth is queer. (Similar to how Bram Stroker's 'Dracula' is queer.) Zeus has given birth and experienced labour that is mostly reserved for women. Ares and Apollo protect women and children, Artemis, goddess of childbirth.
Greek myth is camp and queer (Dionysus's birth, Hermes first day as a baby...peak comedy.) And all that fun family drama and wars sprinkled in, INSTEAD. I feel that LO replaces this queerness with just. patriarchy. Time and time again we see Demeter, specifically, being the punching bag of this patriarchy. She is stripped of the title of mortal queen, she and Persephone are punished infinitely more harshly than the men involved in the cover-up, and the first time Hades actually talks *about* Demeter it's in regards to her as a 'sexual prospect.' And I mean...Hades feels lust towards Persephone's first meeting as well.
TLDR: So ontop of the family tree being moved around, the characters wildly inappropriate to 'canon' depictions, LO also removes the queerness (and campness, and tragedy.) of greek myth, making the series feel that much hollow and patriarchial.

You can read the full episode here, it's not even subtle to anyone who understands the basics of consent and how muddied it can become when one of the participating parties isn't in a healthy, fully coherent headspace. Plus this is happening while people are dying due to a 'plague' that Persephone caused.

The horrifying cherry on top though is that so many of Rachel's fans defended the scene with, and I shit you not, "she said yes".
At best, the Hades x Persephone sex scene is just horribly ambiguous in its line of consent because again, Persephone is having panic attacks over the ongoing deaths that she's causing. Much of it is turned into a "woe is me" pity party without actually addressing the problem. But again, it bears repeating - why do we have more detailed sex scenes in LO when the women are put into ambiguously consensual situations than we do healthy sex scenes between two clear-headed and consenting individuals?

I read a really good Persephone/Hades retelling where Persephone is 18 and Hades was middle-aged (40s-50s) and they nailed the creepy old guy and oblivious teen dynamic. Just makes me wish LO took this route.
I'm not sure if anyone else has made this connection, but I've never seen it mentioned before. I think, similar to Lolita, RS was also inspired by the art of Trevor Brown. His work has a lot of young girls and medical fetish themes (to put it lightly) in a style reminiscent of RS's earlier stuff.

OP I was about to just... dismiss this. Wave it away as a funny coincidence that is indeed funny, but doesn't have any real evidence to back it up. I had a post typed up in response already declaring this, after which posting I was gonna move on with my day, work on Rekindled, play some XIV.
Because sure, there are a lot of resemblances between Trevor Brown's work and Rachel's old art, but nothing that can't be dismissed in good faith as a simple coincidence of being within the same genre of fetish art (first three are Trevor's, last three are Rachel's).

Again, I am not going to accuse Rachel of being a pedophile because that's just not an accusation that should be thrown around without undeniable evidence. What I will say, which has largely remained the same - though even more confidently now than ever before - is that she's clearly someone who took a lot of inspiration and influence from very problematic artists when she was young (I'm talking in her late teens which has me wondering if she started making medical fetish art when she was still a minor-) and then, BEST guess, she started to drop the medical fetish stuff around the time she went to college (which was also the same time she dropped The Doctor Pepper Show, which later got reworked into The Doctor Foxglove Show which was a lot less reminiscent of her medical fetish style from the early 2000's, but still had some of her usual preferences at play) and that's led up to today where she's drawing comics that look like they're for kids but tackle heavy adult subject matter in the worst way possible that straight up perpetuates grooming.

lord help me some pals and i were talking and the subject of LO's theme of "deconstructing purity culture" came up, and we just-
who wants to bet that the message of LO's "deconstruction of purity culture" was literally just "it's okay if you were sexually assaulted, you can still wear white to your wedding" with no further elaboration or analyses or discussion as to why the white wedding dress exists in the first place
like there's definitely something to be discussed there about how virginity is a social construct that is enforced upon both men and women and LO certainly tries to discuss it, but it also makes virginity into a very real tangible thing that can be detected and controlled by the gods of love (ex. Eros) and it seems the message in the end was simply reduced down to "no it's okay, Persephone is still perfect and pure regardless of what Apollo did to her!!!!" while never once stopping to ask itself if maybe the pursuit of being "pure" goes against the entire notion of "deconstructing purity culture" in the first place
but idk man at this point it's easier just to say that LO has no point, no theme, no message, because ultimately it only exists to satisfy the whims of a nearly 40 year old woman with a lot of unresolved shit she claims to be an expert on despite clearly never fully unpacking for herself
the reason we can't come to the "deep conclusion" that rachel wants is because the actual deep conclusion is the stuff she doesn't want us thinking too hard about and the stuff she WANTS us to conclude and give her credit for is the most unfinished, half-baked, fortune cookie, middle school level of "analysis" that isn't even coherent enough to add anything of value to its own call for discussion, and even contradicts its own self-proclaimed intentions through its execution

I’m not killing off Iasion in my storyline btw because I just don’t want to, he just survived Zeus’ attack but barely. Unlike the myth, Zeus didn’t attack Iasion out of jealousy so he did it for a different reason but I don’t know what yet.
I finally got round to posting my Hades redesign! For his design, I desaturated the colors and gave him a far skinnier build. I also gave him some rings and earrings, to reflect his status as a god of wealth. Overall, I'm pleased with how he turned out.
And as a bonus, here's a piece I did a couple months ago of Hades and Persephone! It's aged a lil bit, but I'm resisting the urge to redraw it because I already have enough things to work on. ;-;

I'd make a longer post (and maybe one day I will) but since Lore Olympus, the story that introduced me to webtoons is coming to an end I'd like to say something:
I can't believe it is considered problematic. It has to be one of the sweetest, fluffiest, simplest stories I have read (hence why I still like it, it's a relaxing read before bed) and somehow it got too "kinky" for mainstream. It's laughable.
Everytime I dare to click on their tag or look for the # on Twitter or FB I see people clutching their pearls as if Lore Olympus were brainwashing teenagers into marrying a non existent God of the dead and have babies with him. What the hell?
The fact that people think LO is too dark makes me laugh. A single episode of Rick&Morty, BoJack Horseman or HQS has way more explicit content and dialogue. In fact!!! If it were up to me LO would have gotten genuinely kinky!!! All it does is have some surface spicy tropes that get sugar coated to not make puritans awkward and tbh that's sad. LO and the author get terribly hated anyway for daring to portray the most common female fantasy.
And this all makes me laugh but also mad because you'd think LO at least has some genuine dark themes but no? At most we have Persephone's trauma due to Apollo's abuse and yet that topic is treated as a therapy pamphlet because people couldn't handle an imperfect victim. Hades is a wife guy who shows little to no anger. Hera was re written to be sort of a feminist so that people stopped being annoying about women having emotions.
LO is a sweet, simple story with tiny spicy things here and there that were eventually pushed aside because people couldn't handle it. I wonder how Rachel feels about this, because at the beginning the story was extremely spicy and the only crime was being published in a platform as webtoon, full of people who can't differentiate reality from fiction.
Is LO a masterpiece? Idk! I enjoy the story, it's very self indulgent for me, but I won't go and analyze every detail to see how it should be labeled as it's not meant to be a perfect media. It's meant to be an entertaining, nice story of romance and it does that job very well. This need to demand perfect writing while also crucifying authors over "dark" themes is ridiculous and contradictory.
And I keep wondering, if these people loathe LO so much, why dedicate all that time to the infinte posts they make about how they would have told the story? And all those re tellings are boring! It's always "So Persephone and Hades won't ever kiss here because she's a lesbian. Also he doesn't appear at all. And Demeter isn't an abusive mom! Oh and everyone is ugly because gods shouldn't be beautiful! And Apollo isn't evil he's uwu baby. And no toxic relationships here, Zeus is a good husband!"
Sweet Gaia, you guys wouldn't handle Saint Seiya having Athena in the body of a teenage girl with big tits and who's constantly in the edge of breaking her virginity vows. This attitude screams of jealousy and puritanism and both are disgusting.
TLDR: LO being too problematic for people is both funny and annoying. I wished it actually were as kinky and dark as people insist it is. I'd pay for a toxic romance, but that being said, I LOVE it very much as it is and it's nice to have a re telling that, while not pretending to be loyal to mythology, didn't go for a route of sanitizing all the myths. I hope that once it ends haters will move on and let real fans and the author alone. 🙏
I dislike LO for the writing of female characters, and aside from being incorrect about Hades showing "little to no anger" (He violently assaults Persephone's classmate, his relationship with Minthe and Thanatos, his intimidation of Demeter etc etc.) I actually wish it *was* more dark. And...I wish Rachel didn't erase so many of the characters existing bisexuality. (Apollo, Zeus, etc.)
I *want* to read more about how realistically Apollo's assault SHOULD affect Persephone's relationships moving forward, how Persephone's mass-murder constantly affects her, and how at 19, she thought she was pregnant with her abuser. I want to read about characters being more freaked out about the VAST age difference between Persephone and Hades. These things all canonically happened, but we don't have enough time to touch on or unpack it, much to the reasons you listed, I'm guessing.
And that's fine, if Lore Olympus was supposed to be a 'cute romance' but it's obviously more than that and it's not supposed to just be just that. Because Rachel makes a point to include other tidbits of Greek myth for some reason (Psyche and Eros, Semele and Dioynsus, The Titans, Thetis and Achilles.) It's supposed to be a very, *very* loose modern re-telling of greek myth.
Considering Lore Olympus is a Modern retelling, that means they would have modern rules, right?
I mean, Hecate and Hera wasn't on board with Hades pursuing Persephone since she was (at the start of the series) only 19 and he was 2000+ years old but suddenly Hera changed her mind just because Hades is lonely and I don't know why Hecate changed her mind about it. I guess RS made them change their minds to be more likable to the audience.
