convened to meet Moloch in the chamber one morning

there Moloch curled down, and offered a Crown

impearled with strange knurls, and hurled forth this warning:

I caution you first, this gift bears a curse

for if you accept it, your people will drown,

every morgue overflowing with the piles of growing

millions who died, knowing death for this Crown

but if you reject it? the fee I've selected:

your banks start suspending all loaning and lending

your factories will close, and the profits of those

places temporarily ending, we'll all stop pretending

that Kingdoms and Kings and Other Such Dreams

ever existed at all

(at least until summer or fall)

do you understand the choice at hand?

your sick, and your old, for a season of gold?

will you feed me the souls of these millions dead

to bear this Crown upon your head?

the Great Kings of the World smiled, and said:

"you know we have never rejected one of your gifts, Moloch"
