“Some opulent women’s tombs in the Rhine-Meuse region contain luxurious jewellery and figures sculpted in precious materials that were considered magical or therapeutic in ancient times.
The lizard, whose alert pose has been deftly rendered, is fashioned from a single piece of very pure hyaline quartz, symbolizing the eternal ice that would protect the deceased when crossing the Pyriphlegethon, the flaming river of Hades.”

The pool is perfectly safe for Jima to swim in, due to the fact that my mom keeps the water temp in the 80s and it's got a robust salt filtration system (technically it's not even salty enough to be brackish), but unlike Kaiju, she's much more wary around water. I like giving her the option to use the raft if she wants, but she doesn't always want to! She thought about it tonight, but changed her mind.
Whenever I can, I always try to respect her bodily autonomy. But we can't always do that for our pets. We're responsible for them and we're the ones who put them in situations- it's our job to make sure those situations are safe. Sometimes what the animal wants isn't good for their safety or the safety of their environment. Sometimes my lizard needs to be scooped up quickly or restrained for vet care. When we're outside, she has a harness on at all times to keep her safe, as well as the world around her safe from her. She didn't choose to live with me, and her species didn't choose to be invasive in Florida. But that's kinda what being a human is all about- making the best decisions about what we care for.
And of course as I was writing that she decided that actually, the raft is ok.
Nakajima would like you to look at her nose.
