My very first oil pastel painting. What a delightful experience.

My very first plein air.
Soft Focus Florals, 6x9, Pastels on Paper by Sherilynn Ray
I love creating ethereal, atmospheric paintings. Iāve mostly been doing nature studies with soft pastel, though I hope to try portraits again with it soon (in my own style, of course), working up to combining the two. š In my brain, Iāve already done it, and itās beautiful. š Now to bring it to life!
Composition, value, color; recent plein air painting has influenced me greatly when it comes to these 3 qualities for any painting. Outside, armed with a camera + seeking references, these 3 traits have me saying āwowā at the sky, the horizon, tree lines, and mountains. Iāve never been much of a landscape or background painter, preferring beauty portraits, but my appreciation for our beautiful earth has completely changed.

I love the textures in this sketch, an exploration of landscapes and our part in it.
Lately, Iām really attracted to nature and scale, the idea that we are either so, so small in this giant, beautiful painting of earth, or we are huge and imposing to the tiniest and most beautiful things. Landscapes and the texture within it excites me, and the idea of escaping the office into tree-filled forests has me constantly daydreaming.

My 1930s Royal P typewriter is finally back in my possession after a nearly 2 month long stay at the local repairmanās shop. This is my very first typewriter, a glossy black piece of heirloom history I picked up from an elderly seller who had this sitting in her closet, tucked away and forgotten, an antique quietly ignored. Itās now outfitted with all new rubber, a new ink ribbon, and all its bits and bobs are in perfect working order.
And itās mine. All mine.
āThis is a beautiful machine,ā the repairman said. āI really enjoyed working on this. Customers bring all kinds of crap in here, and I have to turn people away. Most of those older typewriters are junk. But this one⦠It doesnāt get much better than this.ā
Itās addicting. The feel of the keys. The slowness. The analog clack of the hammer as it drives each letter into the ribbon, pressing ink to the page. The feel is just as electric as a juicy fountain pen, and I am enamored. It forces you to think as you type. On an electric keyboard, Iām 150wpm. But on this⦠itās like a sip of tea compared to the frenetic buzz of coffee. Mellow and thoughtful. Elegant.
I couldnāt be happier.
How do you start your day? Mine almost always begins with a cup of coffee, sitting down to plan out all the most important things (I forget stuff easily, and writing it down keeps it top of mind), and digesting a few chapters of whatever book Iām currently reading.
