The promise they could never keep.
On the last Christimas before graduation, Mary, Lily and Alice hugged each other and made a promise. They said they would always be together. No matter what. They would always be there to hold each others hand and to remember themselves that everything would be okay. Unfortunately, things aren’t always as we want them to be. It wasn’t what they wanted or dreamed. It wasn’t what they promised each other. Mary never visited Alice at St. Mungus after the war. She didn’t know she was there. She never got to know Neville and was never able to tell him that he had his mother’s smile. It was only four years after Voldemort’s defeat that she gained courage to visit Lily’s grave. She stayed there for hours crying alone. She was there until the day turned into night and Reginald appeared to hug her and remember that she had to go home. Whenever she read about Harry Potter, she felt a strange pain in her heart. She only met him once. And was never able to say that he had his mother’s eyes - although, she was sure that he listened to that quite frequently. The second time she visited Lily’s grave, she didn’t cry. She only sit in front of the gravestone and read the name carefully. It has been more than a decade and, sometimes, she forgot that her best friend died. Sometimes, she started writing some funny letter to her, just to ler her know how things were going and then, her brain would make her remember the day that she read it on the news. When she memorized the name on the gravestone, she heard herself saying “I miss you more than anything in the world”. She wanted to say more, she wanted to tell Lily that she got married with an amazing guy and that her name was Mary Cattermole now. She wanted to tell about their children and how she would have definetely been their godmother if she was there. But she didn’t. Instead, she stood there, re-reading the name she had just memorized. She heard some footsteps behind her. There was a young guy, although his face didn’t seem that young anymore. He was the perfect combination between James and Lily, he smiled and said "I know you, don’t I?". And, this time, Mary Cattermole answered the right thing "Harry Potter, right? I’m Mary. I was your mother’s best friend".
