You need help educationally⦠I can do that. I can even swing a job that doesnāt involve an assembly line for you- but would you let me? Will you please just let me help you?
I have a job. At a Starbucks. It's not the worst thing in the world.
Why do you want to?
And how quickly did this planet go extinct exactly? I mean, the smell of narcissism and teenage girl had to get to everyone eventually, right?
Not as fast as over-grown man-child did.
Why do you think you have to survive Quinn? Whatās keeping you from just living- with no threat to you or your safety?
I don't have people watching out for me. I go to high school in the hoods, where the graduation rate hovers around 40%, where there was a shooting on campus a couple years ago, and where most of the people get free or reduced lunch and everyone's got a uniform for a job in their lockers -- if they aren't selling something on their own terms. I can barely read, and while I'm better at math, that puts me at 'average', and I'm pretty well fucked in everything else.
Do I reallyĀ need to go on?
-there is a birthday card taped to the door of the small storage room where Ginny and Quinn had kept the boxes from the last tenantās stuff. Inside the card is a note-
Quinn, Happy Birthday!! Youāll probably be getting home while Iām still at work, but when I get home, Iād really like to take you for dinner. And cake. If you want. :) As for your present, it would make more sense if you open the door before reading the rest of this card. I hope you like it. Viktor helped me put it together. We kept it neutral so you can decorate it however you like. I used my employee discount and there should be a StarkPad laptop on top of the desk. The tech who helped me pick it out assures me itās top of the line. I did some tinkering on the blankets so theyāre all warmer and sturdier. I fixed the mattress, too. That should be the most comfortable thing. Ever. If itās not, I can do some more tinkering :) I hope you like it, Quinn. Youāre my roommate and if thereās anything you deserve, itās your own room.Ā I Love You Bunches, Ginny P.S. Viktor said he left his present on your nightstand. Whatever he got, just forgive him. :P He hates shopping and I think the last time he bought a gift for a teenager was when I was your age.
Quinn had gotten home late, and when she did, she was more than ready to fall down onto her couch and fall asleep. She'd pulled a shift and a half (on herĀ birthday!) to cover for someone who wasn't going to make it in (and hadn't bothered to tell anyone until last minute), and as such, she was more than ready to take a nice long sleep.Ā
That was, until she saw an envelope on her couch, pointing her to a door she'd never cared to look in before now.
And there she saw a room of her own.
She hadn't expected something likeĀ this.
Quinn had spent a while keeping Ginny, making her just another person lived with. Quinn had done that in protection of herself -- she couldn't be hurt by Ginny if she never put any hopes on Ginny to begin with. Now she questioned that decision, and the more she read, the more she questioned.
A new laptop would let her have her own space without the constant fear of it glitching up or falling to pieces the way her current (loaned) school laptop did, and an actual bed with temperature-appropriate bedding would mean that she actually might sleep more restfully at night. Quinn's head went dizzy with numbers -- even with a discount, StarkTech was top of the line in performance and price, and a new mattress wouldn't come cheap -- but for once she just let the gift be a gift. She was too tired for much else anyway, and she'd just have to steadily ignore the 'love you bunches' comment at the bottom.
The last thing she checked out before she crawled into her new bed was the gift certificate to a department store. She didn't have any immediate plans, but she'd leave those to her dreams.
Setting her alarm, she made sure she'd wake up sometime before Ginny was due back.
This had not been a bad birthday. Not bad at all.

Gee Whiskers || Wildcard Wednesday (Solo)
Quinn sat cross-legged in a library in front of an open book, and for a rare surprise, it wasn't forced.
She'd discovered a volume of 'Little Orphan Annie' on display while she was returning a book that she had borrowed for class (the only way she was going to get a chance to actually read it), and she'd just had to open it to see what the comics were really like. She'd seen the musical when she was younger, and even though she'd found it a little annoying then... she was curious now.
It didn't take long for her to completely want to throw down the book and walk away.
In fact, she did, but when she turned around, she saw that there was a little redheaded girl standing behind her.
"What the fuck?" she asked, immediately defensive, and the little girl stared up at her.
"Gee, I don't think that's a good word to use, lady. Daddy Warbucks used it once in front of me, but then he told me to never use it, said it wasn't right for a young lady!"
Quinn blinked, and then decided that she'd obviously pulledĀ just one too many shifts at the Starbucks lately.
"Kid, I dunno who the fuck you are or who the fuck you belong to, but scram. I don't deal with brats."
The redhead started to look as though she might cry, and Quinn rolled her eyes.
"Cry all ya want, kid. It doesn't do shit in today's NYC. Shit, probably didn't do shit back when you were relevant."
Quinn went to go put the book in the 're-shelf' area, and then walked out the door and on her merry way.
See if she'd ever go to a library again.
Well do you think youāll go far in life? Thatās what really matters right now.Ā
Not really? I mean, going big has never really been a thing for me. I don't really have a goal. Surviving isn't something you can judge on a standardized test.
Uh-hu, on what planet?
On planet me.
That's right; I'm so goddamned special that they named a planet after me.
Puppy Love || QuinGin
"Sour candies are sweet, too, but theyāre more than that. Youāre like a sour candy. Or something. Anyway. I like having you here. Thatās the moral of this whole thing." She cleared her throat and shrugged, going quiet for a few moments. She knew Quinn wasnāt all that fond of affection, physical or otherwise.Ā
"Anyway," she continued, dropping a corner of her poptart for Nymeria, who was already curled up by her feet, "Do you have to work today? Iāve got to go in for a couple hours to finish up some extra stitching on a piece, but I was thinking later on Iād order some Indian if youāre interested?"
When sheād finished her breakfast she stood up and started clearing off the table. āIāve got a great idea for an upgrade on the fabric on my comforter. If you like it, maybe I can take a look at some of your blankets?ā
"Well, thanks," Quinn said, not really liking how uncomfortable the situation was feeling but also not really having an alternative to fall back on. She didn't like affection that much -- she didn't trust it. Or a lot of people, for that matter, but that was a slightly different issue for a completely different day.
As for the question, Quinn had to look up the answer on her phone, where she had the picture of her schedule. "I'm off tonight," she announced, and realized that she'd have to use most of her time off to get through the homework that she'd been assigned... last week. No wonder her grades were in the shitter. "Order away."
And for the other question... "You can take a look at them all you want. If you're gonna experiment, just make sure they're still all in one piece by the end of it." They were good, sturdy blankets -- or, at least, theyĀ had been, once upon a time. Now they were a bit thinner, a bit more ragged and faded than Quinn would have preferred, but they kept her warm eleven of twelve months in the year, and that was what was more important about them. Sure, the fact that they weren't the thickest meant that she was pretty well fucked in December, but she usually covered that angle with layers of regular clothing as she slept. If they could be warmer? Awesome.
No more letters. Iām breaking out or your mind wipe. See, youāre not that special.
Am so.

Thereās always another option before dropping out. What about tutors? Or extra practice? Or talking with teachers?
Most of them think I'm not gonna go very far or that I'm too much trouble.Ā And they're right.
It can get lonely sometimes, to be honest, but it is also how I met my best friend.
Uhhh... good for you?
What three things do you love most?
Nymeria
Viktor Um⦠a boy I know.
Quinn Oh I hope she doesnāt see this and kill me or go running or something I really like having her around sheās pretty great.
Well, Sandy was a boy. Otherwise I might have considered it. :)
I do clean a lot at the store... but I don't sing. Period.
Puppy Love || QuinGin
"You like the show, donāt lie," Ginny hummed, unfazed before taking another bite of her toaster pastry. She got lost in her thoughts for a few more moments, thinking of Viktor. She hadnāt been hiding as much lately. Viktor promised heād help keep her hidden, and she hadnāt run into any problems lately going to and from work at Stark Industries. She didnāt go out as much as she used to, but she got plenty of socializing at work and at home, between Quinn and Viktor.Ā
"We havenāt- I mean not yet. We havenāt really gotten toĀ that point yeā¦ā Ginny fumbled over her words, her cheeks turning red at the idea of talking about sex with someone about a dozen years younger than her. But Quinn was much more mature than her age indicated. She reached out and squeezed Quinnās hand lightly, āBut yeah. No couch. Obviously.ā She cleared her throat and smiled gently, thoughtfully. āYouāre sweet, Quinn. In your own way. You are honestly like no one Iāve ever met. And thatās a good thing. I promise.ā
Ginny grinned, knowing that Quinnās birthday was soon would make her plan so much easier. Quinn would never accept a gift the size of what Ginny had planned unless it was a major holiday. A birthday seemed like a good enough reason. She mentally made a note to call up Viktor and ask if he could help with it.
"It's okay," Quinn admitted, eating more of her food. The first few nights she'd eaten voraciously, afraid of being told that 'they needed to save some for tomorrow', or, as in the case of the guys she'd lived with before, just not getting that much to begin with. Four grown men with menial labor jobs in department stores and side habits of rocking the ganj every fucking moment they got meant that any food she made or brought home would be picked apart and eaten while she was still eating it.
And Quinn rolled her eyes when Ginny blushed and started stuttering. Not that Quinn could really claim experience -- she'd never really let anyone close enough to experiment with them -- but at least she could fucking talk about the subject. "Thank you for your consideration," she said, laying the sarcasm several layers thick, and took another bite. There was a twitch when Ginny touched her hand (don't lose your cool, Quinn, it's just a touch, it's just a fucking touch, she means well), and a breath let out when the touch had stopped.
"And you are high on 'the crack' for thinking that," Quinn said flatly, dropping her spoon to use air quotes. "Unique -- yeah, I'll cop to that. But sweet? Gin, the puppy must really be doing bad things to you. 'Sweet' is princesses and sugar and bffs and those damn pumpkin spice lattes that EVERYONE seems to want. I'm badass leather punk bitch on the highway to hell. How the actual fuck do you get sweet out of that?"
What three things do you love most?
Nymeria
Viktor Um⦠a boy I know.
Quinn Oh I hope she doesnāt see this and kill me or go running or something I really like having her around sheās pretty great.
Oh Iād pay good money to see that.

A) Sure you hate it.
B) This is stupid.
C) Anyone ever told you how annoying you are?
A) She's a real burden.
B) You're still going along with it, aren't you?
C) Yup! All the time.
Well, I didnāt quite have anything near a typical education, and a lot of it was self-motivation. I was rather young at the time and didnāt have very many friends, so I simply spent all my time studying science. That doesnāt appeal to most people.
No kidding. I'm still... wow. I can't even imagine being that smart.
