Once upon a time, there was a little boy who was certain of only three things: his favorite color, his favorite Pokémon, and his best, only friend.
One day, his best friend was injured and had to stay in the hospital. Although they would only be separate for three days, the little boy’s heart sank in his chest, and he wished upon a star for someone to keep him company in the meantime.
That night, the little boy dreamed of a sky filled with stars, far too many for him to count. A calm, almost parental voice called from all around, warming the boy to his bones.
“Hello, there.”
A blinding light appeared before the little boy, who curled in on himself to hide from it. He noticed that there was no ground beneath him, and he quivered with fright.
“Oh?” If the formless light had an eyebrow, it would have raised it. “Are you afraid? Please don’t cower. I was called by the wave of every lonely tear you’ve ever shed. I am as alien to you as I am intrinsically tied.”
The little boy refused to look up. Peering into the boy’s deepest thoughts, the formless entity made a decision. It grew smaller and smaller, darker and darker, until it took a form it knew the little boy would appreciate.
The boy took his face out of his hands and saw a blue Ledyba floating before him. It was a pleasantly ellipsoidal Ledyba, uncannily so, but the boy trembled no longer.
The little boy sniffled. “How did you know about my—?”
The Ledyba spoke slowly and calmly. “I have come in response to your sadness. While your love is strong and unwavering, you yourself feel hollow without it. I solemnly swear to remain by your side, even after your dearest friend recovers, so that you may allow more friendships into your heart.”
“Do you have a name?”
The Ledyba’s gaze flickered to the multitude of stars around the two of them. “You may call me Twinkle.”
The little boy smiled as he bounced the name around his mouth. He smiled as he and Twinkle shook hands. He smiled as he awoke from his dream, and he smiled as he saw the blue Ledyba with a sun ray pattern on its back, trilling as it snoozed in his lap.
