How to Keep the Monsters Away (long post)
Sleeping in little space can be super fun! But it can be scary when thereโs strange noises and your imagination goes wild. Here are some tips to help you feel safe and sleepy when itโs bedtime!
1) Make sure your room is tidy, especially under your bed and in your closet. Monsters live in trash and clutter, so cleaning in the safety of the daylight is one of the best things you can do to keep monsters away! Plus, if your room is clean, monster checks before bed are much faster!
2) Use a monster spray or leave monster slime by your bed. When I was a child my big sister made monster slime out of shampoo and green food coloring. If monsters touched it they would burn up, so when they saw it they would run. Monsters also donโt like anything that smells pretty, so use a flowery scented frebreeze or something like that, and spray your curtains, carpet, bed, stuffies etc.
3) Donโt watch scary movies or TV too close to bedtime! Courage the cowardly dog is one of my favorite shows, but watching it right before itโs time to sleep gives me nightmares! Stick to fun, lighthearted, silly shows or books right before itโs time to get ready for bed!
4) Donโt eat too much sugar before bed! Dessert is the best meal of the day, but eating a bowl of ice cream right before bed will make your imagination play mean tricks on you and give you bad nightmares. If you tend to get hungry right before bed, eat a light, healthy snack.
1) Get all your stuffies, blankets, pillows and anything that makes you feel safe. If you have a caregiver that sleeps with you, tell them they need to keep you safe while you sleep! Surround yourself with your soft things so that even if a monster came to your bed, they couldnโt find you in the pile of fluff!
2) Monster checks! If you have a caregiver, ask them to check under the bed, in the closet and wherever you think monsters might hide. If you tend to see scary things in the night, grab a flashlight and turn off the lights. If you see a scary shape, shine the flashlight on it to see what the problem is, and change it so the scary thing is gone!
3) Put on nice music, an audiobook, or a sleepy time app. I like to listen to an app called pzizz, where a man in a soft voice talks to me about sleep while music plays in the background. You can get it to play for as long as you want (mine is 8 hours!) I like using headphones to block outside noises out (my roommates can be loud) or you can use a speaker or stereo so they headphones donโt hurt your ears in the night!
4) Put up a white circle. When I was a kid I was terrified something was coming to get me, so I imagined putting a bubble around our house where no one could get in if they werenโt nice. All you have to do is think about it really hard, and visualize the circle all around your house, keeping you safe.
