steve’s being cautious and careful with him, and holds clear boundaries about what they do and what he says. because he doesn’t want to hurt bucky!! or drive him away!! so he just holds back, and he helps bucky remember things, and readjust to a normal life but he never makes a move.

he flirts once and spends three days afterwards feeling like a creep for pushing himself on bucky. even though all he did was use a cheesy pick up line by accident. and bucky totally smiled.

so bucky realizes he’s gotta be the one to step up, and it’s almost like being back in the 40′s. he takes care of his hair again, though he doesn’t cut it because steve blushes prettily every time he sees bucky wear it in a ponytail. he sits close to steve when they eat breakfast, and watch criminal minds, and when steve’s out on their fire escape drawing. he tells steve that cuddling helps “quiet his mind”, when really it wakes him up, but it helps steve chill by thinking he’s helping rather than taking advantage.

bucky kisses steve first, after months of waiting and pushing closer and closer through steve’s walls. it’s gentle, and soft, and it whispers that steve can push him away. that this is an offer, a clarification that bucky is okay now, okay enough for this, that he wants it. but if steve doesn’t, if the 00′s isn’t the 40′s then bucky will happily be his pal.

but it’s on the table, they can move forward together now.
