My thoughts on how Toby thinks of Chara, after 10 fucking years of arguing with people about them: hmm idk. It's impossible to say for certain what he thinks of them, due to how intentionally mysterious and complex they're made to be. Perhaps they were intended to be a gray villain... perhaps they were intended as the secret narrator.... perhaps they were intended to be a fun creepypasta character... no one can claim anything 100% because of the ambiguity.... and it's also possible that they started as one and then his perception changed over the years, from how fans saw them and his own changes over time.... I believe fans with a more negative interpretation are projecting worst case scenarios when that is not typically how he writes his characters, but it's always possible that I am wrong... I do believe there is overwhelming evidence in favor of a kinder, more positive interpretation in the base game, if one digs into the meat of the characters, but I will admit it's mostly subtext and nothing confirmed, so perhaps I'm incorrect... And yet, there is enough that I believe he certainly doesn't see them as a bad or abusive person, from how he writes other characters and the references he's made to them in the Alarm Clock dialogue and choosing to honor the 9th anniversary with the sweet Asriel & Chara letter..... so, ultimately, while we'll never know for certain, I believe he does have a kinder, more sympathetic view of them, and the 9th anniversary letter makes it plain that even if they ARE a villain, they are complicated and hurt-

Like some people are saying that Kris suddenly is unsympathetic now or being a dick or saying they don't feel bad for them anymore and I'M GOING GHOST AHHHHHH
I can see why people could think Kris was sinister in Chapter 1. There's still evidence they're not heartless (how emotional they get thinking of Asriel with the hot chocolate), but the way it's framed and how little of the real them we knew at the time, I can see HOW people at the time could think they were kind of villainous and maybe up to no good. People seemed to tolerate them for their family's sake more than anything (because monsters give the benefit of the doubt when they shouldn't and are too goofy to pick up on warning signs), their pranks seemed kinda mean, they were hard to read, they flashed a knife and a big scary grin at the camera, ahh! Maybe they're possessed by Evil Chara or maybe they ARE Chara or maybe they're just their own kind of evil and we were keeping them in check and now they're going to go kill people and after this we'll switch to Susie and THEY will be the main villain!!
(It feels SO weird to be flashing back to that time lol. Dark days, those were.)

Chapter 2 sunk that COMPLETELY for me and the fandom at large. People DO think fondly of them. Noelle is used to their shenanigans and enjoys their company. They're funny and goofy and deeply, deeply weird. They so, so, SO clearly care deeply about their loved ones, and the Weird Route proved definitively that whatever is happening, they don't want people to get hurt (they're not particularly close to Berdly and they're HORRIFIED by what happened to him and didn't want any of that to happen, going by how upset they were after reuniting with Susie and Ralsei) and they get scared and overwhelmed by what they're put through. We don't know everything about they're thinking, but they're demonstrably a good kid.
We already knew they were up to SOMETHING they weren't telling us. These chapters showed more of that! They went out of their way to show Kris wants to help their friends, but they're bound to this secret plan and they're suffering a lot of anguish over it (passing out drinking?? going sicko mode on the soul after the shit we did to them and their friends in the Weird Route???). They're a TEENAGER in way over their head, they're not malicious or uncaring or being a dick! Nothing has changed since the Kris of Chapter 2, we just got more information on what might be going on. Idk why some people are acting like this is is a huge change that turns everything they thought they knew about Kris on its head.
(MAN for a fandom that claims we love layered characters, we sure are quick to turn on them when they show any kind of layer, huh? Chara Defense Squad, c'mon, we got to rise up and look out for Kris too.)

Despite everything, it's still Kris. They just got a little bit more mystery teased for them and what's REALLY going on. They're a player character fully under our control for most of the chapters and that gets examined in a meta way (cool!!), AND a dynamic character acting behind the scenes with their own secret plans and we don't even know what it is (omg even cooler!!!), AND they're funny and silly and likable and a weird, awkward little guy (YESSSSSS!). Kris is EASILY like one of the best characters of Deltarune and so interesting, and I hate seeing them getting dropped so fast by some just because we got handed a bit more pieces of the mystery like what???
And you know, it's still early, these people might settle down and come back around on em once they think about it more. And I'm reacting to responses I saw on one site, idk if it's a widespread thing or kind of an unusual response, and maybe way more people are as excited by the Kris' kick ass plot as I am. So I might be overreacting and maybe you're sitting here reading this like huh??? people are mad at Kris?! everyone I've seen isn't.
But it's just like, c'mon guys, I think they've earned more than enough goodwill for us to give them the benefit of the doubt and trust that whatever they're doing, they got their heart in the right place.
