These are just a few tips that I’ve used throughout my school life, which I will also be using again this year. 

To Understand- 

Teach others your work, even if they’re not in your class or they won’t understand it. If you do work with someone in your class, even better! you can teach each other the week’s notes and learn twice as much. 

Speaking out loud if you can’t teach someone. Day your notes to yourself in either note form or paragraph. Saying them out loud can make things make more sense if you’re confused with a subject.

Ask someone else in the class or a teacher in that area. If you don’t understand it, maybe they will. 

To Remember-

Flash Cards are such a lifesaver. I use small lined cards or index cards because they’re easy to colour code. Don’t write too much on them, they’re notes, not essays.

Re-highlighter-reading. What I mean by this is: write your notes with just a pen, then after you have, go back through and highlight key words and phrases that get the message across. This works on so many levels, you won’t understand until you do.

Wear a scent for both studying and the exam. Make it a really nice scent that has no real memories attached to it (so not the one you wore on holidays or for your birthday, etc.). It’s a proven fact that you’ll remember more. 

Make a mind map that you can understand. Colour-code it, use acronyms and trigger words. Memorise it and visualise it. If you’re allowed spare paper during the exam, re-write it down and you won’t forget a thing. 

To Avoid Procrastination-

Take away distractions from the room that you’re in. That includes music, youtube, facebook, TV etc. If you can’t take it away, unplug it or put something over it. If you can’t see it then you’re less likely to use it. If you have really bad self-control, give them to someone who knows how to say no. ALSO, NO TEXTING! DON’T TEXT PEOPLE AND BLAME YOUR PROCRASTINATION ON THEM! YOU CAN ALWAYS WALK AWAY FROM THE PHONE!

Procrastination board by LaurDIY. I think this is such a great idea if you’re a huge procrastinator. The idea is: making a massive monthly calender on a pin board and put all of your important dates on it. Across the top, put your common distractions and put times on sticky notes underneath them. Each time you want to take a break or have a distraction, take a sticky note off. This will also help with your self-control.

To Set a Goal-

Be realistic with your end goal. Don’t make it something that you won’t reach in the time limit that you’ve got. 

Set a time limit that is going to be challenging. It’s challenges that make us work harder. 

Put it somewhere you can see. there not much too this, other than just making it big. Stick it on a wall, on your ceiling, on the front of your laptop, whatever. Just make sure that you see it everyday. 

Vision boards really work. Put on it: things that motivate you (pictures of your friends and family, a picture of your end goal), quotes, a picture of where you want to be at the time, your goal, what you need to do to get there and how long you’ve got. 

To Work Smart- 

Work in 30 min blocks. It’s scientifically proven that you’re more receptive to learning in the first and last 15 minutes of your study. Working in 30 mins means that you retain the most amount of informatoin in the longest study period possible. 

Have 5-10 min breaks in between each 30 min study period. Don’t have hours and hours of study becuase it will burn your brain out. It only takes a few minutes to refresh yourself and your mind so use it as your distraction and procrastination time. 

Have silence for harder subjects. As much as you might want to have music going in the background, unless it’s classical, it won’t do you any good. Wait to play music or watch TV for subjects that use less brainpower. 

Have 20-30 min power naps between large blocks. After five or so 30 minute blocks, have a 30 minute power nap as an even bigger refresher. Don’t have more because that’s when you start to feel more tired than when you went to sleep!

Make an easy to read plan and say it out loud. Prioritise your subjects as to when they’re due, add all your commitments and be realistic. Don’t say you’re going to study for 4 hours when you know you’ll only study for 2. 

Use printables from studyblr accounts. I don’t have my own but you can just google for them or I can link you to some accounts that have some. 

To Write-

Plan your work before you start. If you know exactly what you’re going to say and when, you won’t find yourself going on tangents. 

Edit your work as much as possible. Give it to someone else to edit. Get your teacher to edit it. Get another teacher to edit it. The more you edit, the less likely that the class teacher is going to pick up on any mistakes. 

Hand in drafts that are complete. You can only get as much feedback as you hand in. 

Don’t leave it to the night before to finish. At least finish it the day before. 

Practice if it’s for an exam. If theres a word limit, practice handwriting on the same paper you’ll be using during the exam so you don’t have to count the words, you’ll just know by how many lines you’ve used. Practice different topics and genres. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO WRITE A THESIS. 

To Get into the Mindset-

Think Positive. If you don’t think that you can, you won’t. 

Don’t get weighed down by all the work. You’re still going to live afterwards.

Set Up a Study Space Your bed should not be your study space! Find a place with:

Little distractions ie no tv, no loud noises, etc.

Everything you need: all your supplies and stationery

The right temperature, too cold & you’ll lose focus, too hot & you’ll feel sleepy

Snacks, so you won’t have to keep going away from your desk

Water: stay hydrated !!

Exercise Before studying. It will boost your energy levels and help keep you focused.  You don’t have to do a full workout or anything, try going for a quick walk!!

Know your Goal And how you’re going to achieve it! If you know your goal it will be so much easier to stay on task. Perhaps have a reminder of what you aspire to do or the grades you want on the wall in front of you so it’s what you see when you look up!

Since I am often asked about how to learn Korean, what are the best ways to learn Korean, what apps are great for learning Korean, where should I visit in Korea?… I thought it would be smart to compile an extensive list of resources to go about your Korean adventure! \(^o^)/

Learning Korean

So, you want to learn Korean? That’s amazing! But how do you go about doing it?

As with any language, I feel as though it’s extremely important to gain an understanding as to how the language is used. Before delving into multiple books and grammar lessons, it’s important to soak up the way a new language sounds and how it’s used in everyday context. Even a baby is exposed to their native language for years before they dabble in the basics.

So with this in mind, try watching some Korean TV shows, or listen to Kpop. (If these aren’t already your reason for wanting to learn such a beautiful language!) However, if you’re a Kpop fan, I’d recommend watching a few dramas, just to recognise how words are spoken in normal conversation, and vice versa! So if you’re a Korean drama enthusiast, try listening to Kpop if you haven’t already.

You’d be amazed at how quickly you will instinctively pick up basic words or phrases, before you even understand the alphabet! 

I want to emphasise how although this isn’t an essential step, (because I know a lot of you will be itching to get started) I do believe that having a small understanding of the spoken language first, greatly reduces any confusion when diving into grammar, pronunciation and the alphabet.

So, you’ve binged watched every Korean Drama, and learnt all the lyrics to your favourite K-pop songs? What do you do now?..

Sounds easy, and quite honestly it is! You just need practice. The best places to learn the alphabet and how to use it:

There are loads of resources out there for learning Hangul! But these are the few that I think are simple, easy to understand and provide a quick result! I highly recommend Seemile.com; their playlist takes you straight through the basics in a classroom style lesson. It’s very easy and straightforward to understand. Alongside Seemile.com, Korean From Zero is also extremely useful for learning Hangul.

I highly recommend learning the pronunciation correctly, rather than relying on romanisation. Romanisation is not always 100% accurate and can leave the words feeling too artificial when spoken.. When relying on romanisation alone, you’ll also find that it can often restrict you when learning new vocabulary, or even visiting South Korea itself! It’s best to first grasp a solid understanding of the alphabet and how to read it before you decide to jump straight into grammar!

Right, now you’ve mastered the alphabet. What now?..

Grammar

I’m sure grammar can seem quite intimidating at first, but you’d be surprised at how simple it is!

Learning a new language is never a quick, or an easy ordeal. However, taking it step by step in bitesized pieces, is often the best approach, and sometimes the most effective! 

I would always recommend learning with free sources before investing money into learning a language, because more often than not, free sources are easily accessible, motivational, and incredibly rewarding. Once you grasp an understanding for how the language feels, and whether it’s right for you, I would only then suggest buying sources like books, and audio CDs etc. 

However, this is purely up to personal preference, as I know some people may prefer to buy the tools necessary for learning as the motivation to learn it! 

And of course, there’s no use learning grammar if you can’t understand words! So it’s very important to keep improving and updating your vocabulary as often as possible.

Or even try following your favourite Korean celebrities on Twitter or Instagram. It’s amazing how much you can learn from social media! Especially if you try following news stations such as KBS or MBC, it will give you some fresh Korean on your dash regularly. 

With any language, the best way to learn it is to surround yourself with it as much as possible! 

Listen to Radio stations, such as KBS Cool Fm, or KBS 1 for talk and news, or even MBC Radio. There are many stations to listen to! Even Podcasts are a great resource, listen to native Korean speakers discuss book reviews, or talk about film. It’s a great way to immerse yourself within the language.

To further emphasise me previous point, try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible! It’s also an incredibly motivating experience to talk to native speakers (although it might not be within everybody’s comfort zone) but it really has the benefit of throwing you into the deep end; providing you with the confidence to learn, adapt and grow extremely quickly as you put your knowledge to use! Plus, it’s very rewarding to meet new people, make new friends and learn things you can’t learn from a website! HelloTalk is the best app for this, from my experience.
