I came up with this concept for a illo a while back and felt like it is relevant today more than ever. So I drew it. The time of systematic racism and police brutality needs to stop! When I decided to illustrate something of meaning that could encapsulate the absolute devastation that has ravaged my beautiful country and the animals that live within it, I didn’t want to draw anything lighthearted. The emotions attached are too strong, too raw and too inconceivable. One could look at this and construe a sense of survival and resurrection from the ashes of a ravaged land. The determination of an animal to live at all cost. This would be fitting if that is your interpretation of a narrative more suited to you. My meaning however is a more solemn one. Our normally adorable and affable koala is filled with justified anger, striding from the hell that was once it’s home in search, not for help - for answers.
