Image of German archaeologist Robert Johann Koldewey, who unearthed the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and the Procession Street, sitting on the Lion of Babylon. The image is taken from the Internet Archive’s “By Nile and Tigris: A Narrative of Journeys in Egypt and Mesopotamia on Behalf of the British Museum Between the Years 1886 and 1913” by Sir E. A. Wallis Budge, published in 1920. The Lion of Babylon, a national symbol of Iraq, was unearthed in 1782 by Pierre Joseph de Beauchamp, a French diplomat and clergyman. When he visited the site of ancient Babylon, the locals told him about the lion. Upon removing the debris covering the area, he discovered that indeed the lion was still there.
