The night was cold,
the sky was black.
I was trying to sleep
when you finally came back.
Your eyes were in fury -
alcohol filled your breath.
You pinned me down in a flurry,
and I knew I had nothing left.
I tried to scream,
but it only made you madder.
You made it so I couldn’t breathe,
or get any sadder.
My whole body ached,
your fists felt like fire.
My head was in pain,
ears ringing like a choir.
Then I heard it -
people outside our tent.
“Make a noise and I’ll kill you,”
then off you went.
I could’ve said something,
or even ran away.
But I stayed silent,
and I have up to this day.
I kept your secret, yet you still left. Left me to live in fear of everyday on my own. (c.g.)
