It’s been a while since I wrote a new post on Tumblr. Considering the fact that a this school year is coming to and end soon I decided to write about something I think is very important for everyone (not just studyblrs) to understand.
BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU
I often get carried away with all the posts on social networks and I try to be something I am not. I’m not super rich or talented and it took me a long time to deal with it. My bedroom is messy, my study-desk is a disaster and so is my closet. My room is not decorated the way I want it to be. The thing is, those things don’t define YOU. People you hang out with, movies you watch, books you read, music you listen to - that is you. It’s your personality. Just because a song is popular it doesn’t mean you have to listen to it. It’s the same thing with eveything else. Now I’m getting a little bit off topic here, because what I really wanted to write about is HOW to be the best version of you and how to find the real you.
P.S. Try not to think of school when you read each of these. I know education is a big part of our lives, but there is life out and after high school/college. Instead, recognize yourself in family/friend relations while you read.
WHAT NOT TO DO
1. Change yourself for someone else.
I feel like when you meet new people you kinda try to fit in better by pretending to like the things they like. This usually happens when you’re new in high school or in college.
2. Be embarassed of who you are.
Okay, you like that terrible Kesha song but we all have our “dirty” secrets. Are you a criminal, have you betrayed your family and friends, have you cheated on your so ? And again these are only some things I find bad. Not everyone has same standards. So there’s no point in being embarassed, because you will never please everyone. It’s impossible and frankly not healthy for your well being.
3. Blindfully follow trends.
Whether it’s fashion, technology or something else don’t. It’s okay to be modern, but it’s not okay to let it takeover your whole life.
4. Force yourself into things
Don’t do things just for the sake of saying you do them. If you go to the gym - do it for getting healthy and looking better and because you enjoy it. Not so you could title yourself as “fit”. Don’t go to concerts, parties, trips so you can say you went. You need to have strong, personal reasons for doing sth in order to meet the real you.
5. Distinguish yourself
From friends, family and other outer influences. You are you, a unique human being in and out. We are all easily influenced by people and events, so easily that we let them shape us. Know that no matter where or with who you are, your mind and soul should stay the same - untouched.
WHAT TO DO
1. Think about what you truly like.
You don’t have to say “I only like pop music”, “it would be better if you put it like this “I like romantic songs with a good beat to follow” (e.g.) Try to be specific in what you like and dislike, but leave room for exceptions.
Helpful questions to ask
When are you the happiest?
When does time fly by so quickly you don’t even notice?
When do you forget about all the troubles?
Are you happy being
a) alone
b) around people
c) both?
Is what you are doing now aligned with your anwers to previous questions? (If not, I suggest you start doing what you like, it’s your life to live.)
2. Organise yourself.
No, I did not just tell you to go and clean up your room. What I really mean is, delete/throw away/get rid of stuff you don’t like/need. Ok, maybe I did tell you to clean up your room, but I also tell you to, most importantly clean up and organise YOUR MiND.
3. Don’t overthink.
I know this is a difficult one, but from my experience spending too much time thinking about any topic, makes it worse. It’s always better to do sth about it (if possible) or to focus on easier things that don’t bother you.
Also, spending too much time analysing yourself (personality, actions, thoughts) leads to too much stress (my case). To really get to know yourself try putting yourself into different social situations instead of clinging onto one event and analysing it in your head over and over.
4. Prioritise self care.
I cannot stress this enough. Self care (mental and physical) should be your priority 24/7. Start with physical (it’s easier for some) by taking a bath, washing your hair, getting your nails done etc. Slowly get to know what mental self care is for you. Everybody’s different but here’s a list of things that could work:
1. Reading a book, watching a movies/show, listening to music.
2. Sleeping (mental and physical one win-win)
3. Eating.
4. Activity you love - shopping, dancing, drawing etc.
5. Being alone/ going out - depending on you.
5. How do you see yourself in 20/40 years?
No, I am not hiring after this text. What I mean to say is - when you have a clear idea of what you want your life to be like in the future it’s easier to achieve it and you will feel more motivated daily. Here’s a small checklist to help you:
1. Dog/cat
2. House / apartment
3. Sexual orientation
4. Foreign country yes/no
5. Kids (if yes, how many)
