actually. that post about how its important to have weird kinky queer friends. i think the same is true of really every type of ostracized person but in particular i wanna point it out wrt mentally ill people.

if you watch a movie villainizing DID or schizophrenia or something, and you think, "hey, this seems sort of like its based on what my friend has and theyre just a chill person, why are they making my friends condition seem threatening?" thats good.

if you see someone use narcissist as a synonym for abuser and you think, "what, no, im friends with someone who has NPD and i know theyre a kind person, this isnt true at all," thats good.

if you hear politicians try to frame addicts as violent criminals who should be locked up and you think "no, my buddy sam is just sick, their withdrawals are really painful and they dont have a good support system, they shouldnt be locked up for that," thats good.

being able to counter ableist rhetoric with "i know from experience thats not how these people are" is a good thing. like yeah obviously dont make friends with mentally ill people just for brownie points but also try to make the conscious effort to be open to friendship with people who have stigmatized mental health issues. and maybe even more importantly, be someone who makes it clear to others that youre safe to be open about these things with, because chances are youre ALREADY friends with mentally ill people even if you dont realize it, because a lot of us with more demonized conditions try to hide those conditions out of fear, and it helps a lot to know our friends are allies - and then we might feel safe discussing our experiences, IF we want to, and in turn that can help you better understand the realities and diversities of our situations and be less susceptible to ableist rhetoric.

It has been hard for me to talk about how what is going on with Israel and Palestine is affecting me personally, but I grew up in Gaza and most of my family still lives there. My father did not survive the bombings last week and I have not been able to contact my younger sister in days. I am try to being understanding that most people do not have personal connections to what is happening and therefore are justifying their silence, but is heartbreaking to see this misinformation being spread. What’s happening there is a genocide, not a war. It is not antisemitic to support Palestine, it’s not even antiemetic to criticise Israel. There is no grey area or neutrality regarding this, and it is so easy to find resources that will educate you on the subject. It is my people and my home being destroyed so I will never be silent about this, but I please urge everyone to get informed and start speaking up and finding ways they can help.

Journalists should remember that Israel's first response after they killed their colleague Shireen Abu-Akleh was to say Palestinians shot her. This is part of a consistent Israeli military information damage control strategy in response to such events.

Then, they attacked her funeral, live on camera in front of the whole world, and proceeded to blame Palestinians.

In 2021, after destroying a building in Gaza housing the AP and Aljazeera office, again on live TV they lied about it being a legitimate target.

In 2018 Israel snipers shot thousands of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza, many live on camera, then lied about them being armed.

In 2014 they killed the Baker boys while they were playing soccer on the beach, in front of the world's cameras, and then they lied about it.

The list goes on and on. It is part of a deliberate strategy to muddy waters & defuse international outrage over the most gruesome crimes so that they can have the maximum possible time to continue carrying them out. If you as a journalist are playing into this, you are complict.

i stopped playing Apex Legends years ago but one of the funniest parts about it is how, for the last two years, something like 90% of the top 100 players across all platforms use a controller instead of KBM, even though most of them are playing on PC. this is because using a controller literally gives you an aimbot - the aim "assist" is notoriously overtuned to the point where it basically locks your aim onto any enemy that's close enough. this aimbot is so strong that professional FPS players with years of KBM experience still get better results after just a month of learning how to use a controller.

the funniest part of this is that sometimes a brainlet console player will point to the 90% controllers stat and go "see? controller is clearly the superior interface, even the pros are switching!" and then everyone can have a good laugh at their expense

all of you are so fucking correct. the response to addiction doesnt have to be "oh all these other things (coffee, weed, cigarettes etc) are no different than other addictive substances so we should all adopt a mentality of hate the sin and love (pity) the sinner" instead of "people self medicate with a variety of substances and that can lead to physical and mental dependencies and people should be able to make their own decisions of what they put in their body and should be supported in doing so in ways that can reduce harm"

but thats a lot less dramatic and condescending tho so *shrugs*
