Frost

2025

Frost is a short film about memory and time, following my grandmother as she searches for fragments of her fading memories of me. The film combines found footage, hand-processed film, and layered sound design to convey the fragmented, blurred, and occasionally vivid nature of memory.

Visually, I used additive and subtractive techniques, along with bleaching, directly on the film surface to create scratches, marks, and stains. These gestures allow the images to appear as memories do, like some erased, some flickering back into view, giving the footage a tangible sense of temporal trace and the process of searching through recollection.

I spent three days editing this short film in Premiere pro, constantly slicing and rearranging the footage. I turned some clips white as negative to express inner thoughts and emotions.

The audio part really surprised me, I ended up with twelve more tracks. My last film only had three or four, but this time it took much more layered sound to support the visuals.

Today in class we learned about sound design. We first analyzed Sunset Aorta by Melanie Elmir as a case study to understand how sound contributes to storytelling.

Today we watched Nightcries by Tracey Moffatt, a very beautiful but sad short film, I was honestly shocked when I saw the end credits. There were so many people involved!

It made me realize how even a short and seemingly simple film requires the effort and collaboration of a large team. Every “simple” moment on screen carries the hard work of many people behind it.

The work that impressed me the most in class was 172 VIEWS: 1981 - 1988 By Katharine Cullen

This work is a view of Sydney Harbour. Australia's feathered icon laughs the bridge into animation. "The bridge dances to a rhythm created by the hype which sails beneath it. A parody of a view which people pay millions to be near."

Do Acacias Dream of Other Universe?

In this project, I aimed to explore the rhythms present in both the cosmos and earthly life through moving images, sensing the pulse from light and stars to the growth of plants. I drew inspiration from Stan Brakhage’s cameraless experimental films, in which rhythm emerges naturally from light and repetition, prompting me to consider the materiality of film itself. I experimented on 16mm film using additive and subtractive techniques, as well as contact printing, directly creating scratches, dots, and stains on the film surface. Some techniques were particularly effective, such as producing star-like flickering marks, while certain stains were less visible after digitization.
