What Gets My Motor Running

In December 1862, Walt Whitman read a newspaper casualty list and saw his brother's name. He raced to a battlefield in Virginia, terrified of what he'd find. His brother survived, just a scratch on his face. But what Whitman saw around him changed his life forever: thousands of wounded and dying soldiers, packed into makeshift hospitals, with barely enough hands to care for them.

He was a poet, not a doctor. Nothing obligated him to stay. But he couldn't turn his back on what he'd witnessed. So he moved to Washington, D.C., and for over a decade, he showed up. Day after day, he walked hospital wards filled with the broken and dy*ng.

He dressed wounds. He fed men who couldn't feed themselves. He wrote letters home for boys too weak to hold a pen. He sat with the dying so they wouldn't face their final moments alone. Historians estimate he comforted more than 80,000 soldiers this way, asking nothing in return. No medals. No recognition. Just presence, when presence was the only thing left to give.

Walt Whitman didn't fight this war with a rifle. He fought it with compassion, one bedside at a time. That is a kind of courage America should never forget
