the biggest problem with consent education is generally it starts when you’re in college which is way too late lol. but the second biggest problem imo is the focus on the external rather than the internal - consent means getting a yes. and this make sense if you’re teaching people how to not get title ix or police reports filed against them for rape. which means that there’s a whole slew of manipulative and traumatic behaviors that go undercovered by consent training. consent is taught is legal terms rather than moral terms. men need to learn to go through the process of asking themselves whether a woman wants sex or if she feels she can refuse sex rather than simply trying to procure a yes. and yes. this process would seem awfully onerous to a college-aged man (especially one who is resistant to basic college consent training in the first place) which is why this has starts to young (even my fairly liberal school district didn’t really cover consent in high school - what sense does it make to teach young people about consent AFTER most of them are sexually active?). simply, consent needs to be about empathy.
