“I love the sky. It’s so limitless.” “It is big. It’s very big.” “Big doesn’t even sum it up, right? That word big is so small.”
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) dir Lasse Hallstrom
Soapdish (1991) dir. Michael Hoffman
One of my faves.
Omg.
Here are my tour dates. Look at all the people I get to be in conversation with, holy shit are we going to have fun. So please, please come and say hello. A few notes:
+ I’m going to add a few more dates in April to some southern indie bookstores because I <3 indies.
+ There will be some UK/Ireland dates in April as well.
+ Maybe I will do some TX cities in the fall.
+ Maybe I will do some festivals in the fall.
+ I am a little sorry I am not doing whatever city you would like me to do that I am not doing but I am not that sorry because I am doing a lot of cities already and there is only one me to go around and also I hate air travel and it gets lonely on the road and I will miss my dog a lot but I hope we can still be friends?
+ I will be in NYC all summer. Get in touch if you have something cool going on.

We need her more than ever.
This photo is on my desk at home. I talked about it once on @peteholmes show. This is Robert Kennedy backstage at the 1964 Democratic Convention. Literally sitting on the steps because LBJ wanted to make him as uncomfortable as possible. His older brother, the President, had been killed a few months before. Now a narcissistic bully was in his place, terrified Robert Kennedy would steal his thunder. Robert Kennedy was as emotionally and politically disillusioned as a person could be. He went up and gave his speech. Before he could begin he got a 19 minute standing ovation. Its on youtube. Its absolutely indescribable. And he went on to do more in the next four years before his death than most people do in a lifetime. You get back up and keep going.
We have to look all around us, at our neighbors, and imagine the conversations they must be having. Now is when we call on our empathy, now is when we imagine what the other person must be going through, now is when we must listen. Now is when we make small acts of progress with the earth.

I wrote a small thing for LitHub about empathy during these times.

Every damn day now I wake up and think of the real life Mazie Phillips, and how she devoted her life to helping people, and treated everyone fair and equal, and lived in a city populated by people who came from all over the world to seek hope and freedom, and I wonder what she would think about all this, and my best guess is she would just keep on doing what she had been doing, pray for the future, and buckle down and keep on spreading the love.
Waiting to promote ‘Stand By Me’ on Good Morning America in 1986 by Wil Wheaton.
‘’I forgot what day this picture was taken, but it was 1986, right after Stand By Me had been released. There we are, sitting on chairs in the green room, waiting to go be interviewed by (I think) Ron Reagan, Jr. It was my first trip to New York, and I remember how excited I was to go to that huge, almost mythical city, see Times Square, ride the subway, visit the Statue of Liberty, and hang out with Jerry in his home town.
This photo captures our personalities perfectly: River and Corey are focused and serious (Corey is even wearing a tie and drinking coffee!) I am listening to the same person they are, but I’m not even trying to contain how excited I am to be going on a television show that I had been watching with my Aunt Val since I could remember, in front of the whole country, no less.
My favorite part of this picture, though, is Jerry. It’s almost like he caught my mom or dad taking this picture of us, and decided to strike a pose, just to be silly. I just love that he isn’t taking the thing too seriously, and that he’s just having fun and enjoying the whole thing. As I got older and began to feel like the teen magazine publicity stuff was taking over my life, it stopped being fun, and it started to feel like a chore. I always envied that Jerry seemed to take it all in stride, keep it in perspective, and just have fun with it. I heard him on the Adam Carolla podcast about a week or so ago, and he hadn’t changed a bit: still silly, still cracking me up, still keeping everything in perspective.
I’ve always said that Stand By Me was so successful because Rob cast four young actors who were so much like their characters, but I think it’s spooky how the four of us ended up being so much like our characters: River died too young, Corey struggled like crazy to get his personal demons under control, Jerry found success and happiness, and I’m a writer….
I have had a fucking weird life, man.’’

Staying Home
There are bruises all over my legs: a booger-colored, kayak-shaped one plunging down my shin, a bland purple coin in the center of my knee, fingertips in yellows and browns dancing up and down my flesh.
I go to the gym as often as I can. It’s something to do. I bring the kids, deposit them in the free daycare, wave bye-bye and blow kisses. Grip the oily handles of the elliptical machine, feel silent, smell my own sweat, silently seeping out of me. Everyone talks about seeing results. I see results. New lines and tone. A half hour of quiet, like pushing the reset button. I want to wear shorts more now, despite the bruises.
Push reset! I instruct my older boy, when he’s getting going. We all need to push reset. No one pushes reset for the momma, though. She’s got to heave up, stumble over, prod for the button all on her own.
My older boy whispers, “I have to tell you something,” stomping all over my feet to get close enough to my face, knocking his knee into my shin, pinching and pulling and shoving. There is no grace to being a toddler, no grace to being a toddler’s mother. In the morning, there’ll be more bruises, but I’ll have forgotten what he wanted to tell me.
The baby wakes in two- to three-hour intervals, or whenever he pleases. He’s too old to do this, just google it and see for yourself. But here we are, settling into the farting glider cushion, his room dark but for the alien blue of the light coming from his sound machine. What I asked for was a hush, a loud quiet, a mechanical mouth shushing in my absence. I got the mouth, but it came with an eye. Nightlight, it threatens. It’s the kind of blue light that makes my throat feel scraped, makes me feel clinically alone at ten p.m., at one a.m., at three a.m., at oh my God o’clock.
But the thing about staying at home—such a funny way of putting it—is that you are never alone. There is the toddler, the baby, the dogs.
The other thing is that you are always alone. What I asked for was more time with the kids. A chance to step back, breathe them in. What I got was that plus that blue light, flooding the room, that scraped throat feeling. The baby is always so happy, relieved, to see me. I’m here, I coo, and I don’t ask, What are we doing here? Why am I still going in and out of this dark hush of a room at all hours of the night? What do you want, from me?
In the morning, bruises. Spilled grinds I mistake for ants. A hissed goddammit! “Ma, he said ‘stupid,’” my son tells me, pointing at the TV. He is learning that it’s not nice to say stupid, fat, ugly. He is learning that from the TV. So often TV is the balm, the reset. I am failing. Ah, that’s it, I’m getting to it: the blue light floods the room so we can all see how much I’m failing.
It goes by so fast! People trip over themselves to tell me this. Enjoy it. It’s over before you know it. I know they’re right; I know it in my bones. I know it in my bruises, tender the way my heart is now, never quite healing from the blast each birth gave it. But still, I want to quip, Promise? Instead I make that face I’ve been making lately, that approximation of a smile, pulling my lip up and showing my teeth and, because it feels like a threat, like a baring of teeth instead, which I don’t mean, I add a wink at the end. This is what I’ve come to think of as my mom face. I’m crazy, my face says, but don’t worry, I don’t mean it.
