Corin wrote a piece about swimsuits that started funny... the parking lot nipple tuck, the post-lake adjustment choreography, the seaweed situation... and it ended up somewhere more uncomfortable.

The part that stuck with her: the swimsuit doesn't cover insecurity. It manufactures it. It takes your body and turns it into a fit problem requiring a solution. Too much here, not enough there, wrong shape for this cut. The suit becomes the standard and your body becomes the variable that either measures up or doesn't.

She gets to a place at the end that some people will push back on, and others will completely recognize from their own experience. Either way, it's worth the read.

People have such strange reactions to nakedness - and one of my least favorite is the concept that by revealing your body, you are somehow ‘giving too much away’ or ‘not leaving enough to the imagination’. Along with those phrases comes the implication that by letting others see your body, you lose some of your mystery, and thereby some of your allure.

To those of you who feel that way, I ask this:

What have you learned about me by seeing me naked?

If you think about it, you’ll realize that there are very few substantial answers to that particular question. Seeing my naked body may tell you things like how much I moisturize (a lot), or how much time I spend in the sun (none), or whether I’m a natural redhead (obviously)… but that’s just about where it stops. 

And if that, my friends, is as far as you’ve let your imagination wander when it comes to other human beings, I would venture that you don’t have much imagination at all.

Looking at a naked body can’t tell you a person’s dreams or motivations. It can’t tell you what someone is like when they’re in love. It can’t tell you about their fears, or their heartbreak, or their loneliness. It can’t tell you of their triumphs or their failures. It can’t tell you about family histories or past loves. It only gives the barest hint of what it might be like to touch their skin, or how it would feel to hold their hand, or kiss them. It cannot tell you how you might feel waking up in their arms.
