Although Eiji usually has no choice but to accept Ash’s sacrifices and more often than not relies on them, he has been shown repeatedly choosing to jeopardize his own safety in favor of Ash’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Throughout everything, Eiji stays with him because he loves and appreciates Ash for who he is despite everything he’s been through and because he knows Ash needs and deserves love and protection more than anyone, and no one else in his life is going to give it to him. Being with Eiji is the only time he can return to that youthful innocent stasis, the only place Ash can receive the pure uninhibited love and support he needs to heal years of trauma, abuse, and neglect. Eiji is his physical and emotional sanctuary, the one thing in Ash’s life that keeps him sane. When Ash falls too far, Eiji’s there to bring him back to those golden fields of rye.
