Nat used to hate the silence that laid over her like a wet blanket. She had hated it since the second her dad died and all that was left was the quiet and the sound of a sobbing woman. So she did the only thing that gave her a way out of quiet. She turned the music up in her room until Thom Yorke was all she could hear. And then Nat met you. A little under a year and a half after her dad died she met you. Sitting in a corner behind the small Wiskayok High School just sketching while Nat pulled out an altoids box filled with joints. Something about being sick of her blunts getting crushed. You weren’t all that sure to be honest. But soon enough you got to know Nat past rumours. You got to know that she wasn’t just some asshole player. Quite the opposite, actually. Nat was sweet. And caring. And affectionate. Somewhere between relentless teasing and her teaching you to smoke a joint without coughing up a lung, you started dating. And after that, you find yourself spending a lot of time at Nats house laid on top of her with your face buried in her neck. And finally one day Nat didn’t turn her music on to drown out the silence. She didn’t start talking or have you talk. She just listened to you breathe and mutter in your sleep. And for the first time, she just fell asleep curled up with you. No music, no smoking, no texting Van asking if she would be a dick for leaving her own house while you slept because she was worried about getting too comfortable. She just kissed your head one last time and let her eyes close for the night. And that was that. Because finally the quiet wasn’t triggering or painful. It was just comfortable.
