Dapper rabbit doodle.
Sleepy bunnies! These guys were part of another illustration (see previous post) but they ended up being just a small part of the final. I had a lot of fun drawing them and the foliage so I thought I would work up a bigger version and play around with the colouring. All the colouring for this was done with Kyle Webster's photoshop brushes (just click the link to go to his shop) If you don't have you should totally get because they're amazing and EXTREMELY affordable. Get 'em!
A new image for the Globe and Mail. This went along with an essay in which a woman writes about two experiences when she saw the dark side of a loved one. The first was when her beloved German Shepherd brutally desecrated a rabbit's nest and the other was when an older, well-trusted family member tried to prey on her young daughter. This was some sensitive material so it was an interesting challenge trying to find a way to handle it delicately. While working on this I realized that I often use shadows in my concepts so I think I'll try to avoid them in the future, haha. Thank you to Matt French for the assignment!
Something I've been working on...
Some recent work for the Globe and Mail! Cover of the Life and Arts section this time. For an interesting interview by Tralee Pearce with author Jennifer Senior about how becoming a parent doesn't necessarily make you as "happy" as others have led you to believe. Read the article here. Thanks to Devin Slater for the assignment and Matt French who did a brilliant job with the layout!

A new illo in the Globe and Mail today! It's accompanies an essay by a woman who recounts a computer hacking experience. The hacker rerouted her e-mails and sent out his own to all of her contacts claiming the woman had gotten herself into a bad spot in the Philippines and needed money. Rotten scammers. This was a tricky one but I'm happy with how it turned out in the end. I'm fond of the shadowy guy even if he's a no-good computer hacker. Thanks to Matt French at the Globe!
New work for This Magazine! This illo went along with a fiction piece by Andrew Forbes called "Dark Blue". It's a sad piece about a young girl who's life takes a turn after a getting into a local boy's big blue truck one night. A big thank you to AD David Donald for the assignment and going along with my favourite concept. That's always the best!
Some recent work for the Globe and Mail! The Globe was both my last client of 2013 and my first of 2014 which was awesome. I always love working with the guys from the Globe. Above, first is a Facts and Arguments illo about a woman who resumes piano lessons as an adult and describes what a journey it is attempting to learn an instrument. Next are some spots for the cover and interior of the Travel Section's year end round up of wacky travel stories. They included everything from a lady who wouldn't stop (badly) singing Whitney Houston on a plane to Justin Bieber. One spot made it to the cover of the paper (don't mind the water spots on my copy there haha). And last is another Facts, this time about a woman who missed the memo about the lockdown drill happening at her school and had a terrifying few moments before she realized what was going on. Thank you so much to Matt French, Alex Bozikovic and Devin Slater at the Globe. What a great way to kick off the year! I you all have a fun, happy and successful 2014!!
WIP - Bear in helmet! Something a little Golden Compass inspired.
I had the pleasure of illustrating this for Financial Post Magazine a little while back. The article describes a couple who had worked hard and had done well for themselves financially and were ready to retire. However, they were unsure if they had accumulated enough to maintain their high standard of living and weather the uncertainty that comes with retirement. The article had a lot of financial specifics so for the image I had the opportunity to pull back and approach it a little less literally. I'm glad I got to work in some of my love of nautical things in this one. Thanks so much to AD Genevieve Biloski!

Man's best friend - New work for the Globe and Mail! It's a for a really sweet article in which a man talks about how much he loves letting his dog sleep next to him and his wife on their bed and the ancient bond between humans and canines. You should read it! Read it here.
I had a lot of fun with this one! I love me a nice dog story and definitely one I can relate to. My bf's beagle LOVES to sleep on the bed. This dog is so cuddly, he lets me hug him like a teddy bear, haha. Thanks so much to AD Matt French!
Some yummy new work for Canadian Running Magazine! Perhaps a little relevant today with all the candy that's floating around for Halloween. I think most of us will be taking the candy path today, haha. Thanks so much to Dianne Kapral for the assignment! It was fun drawing all that food.
