Life at UCR

So your Etsy shop isn’t as lucrative as you’d hoped. You’ve been hard up for cash ever since the Beanie Babies bubble burst. You’ve found that you don’t exactly understand how Bitcoin works. Now what? If you have anyhope of sustaining your Moo Moo Truck habit, you’re going to need a job. But before you accept that soul-sucking retail position all the way in the Beverly Center, let me enlighten you to the world of on-campus employment.

Why On-Campus?

You might be curious as to why so many students prefer on-campus jobs to any off campus. Aside from avoiding the circus sideshow that is the Galleria at Tyler on a Saturday, these students are smart to seek out on-campus employment as the benefits are as bountiful as crying fans at a One Direction concert.

A student first, an employee second: Every on-campus employer understands that your education is the highest priority, so each department works with you on creating a work schedule that revolves around your classes. They’re even totally cool with scheduling extra time off for studying!

All in a day’s work(study): If you were granted a Work-Study award through your financial aid package, you can utilize on-campus jobs as your method of accessing that fund.

The commute can’t be beat: With such a large portion of students living so close to campus, the commute to work is a breeze. Have a shift right after class? No problem! Your commute is just a walk through campus.

Job Spotlight:

You’d be surprised by how many employees on campus are actually students: from that cheery voice that scheduled your academic advising appointment to that one barista who makes a vanilla latte that’s descended straight from heaven (shout out to Ivan’s!). With so many eating options here on campus, it’s no wonder UCR Dining is such a large employer of students. In addition to acquiring skills transferrable to other jobs such as food prep and POS register experience, UCR Dining allows for growth within the department with student manager positions offered to qualified employees. Plus there’s also a chance to be surrounded by ice cream in your place of work, which is a personal dream of mine.

So your summer is coming to an end and you’re staring at the ceiling in your parent’s house or the popcorn white above your student apartment, contemplating life. You’re headed to one of the nine undergraduate University of California schools and though you’re surrounded by like-minded scholarly students and faculty the struggle is still very real…

The UCR Career Center offers over 200 events on campus each year - ranging from career fairs, workshops, information sessions, and networking events for students. I just attended my first Finance, Accounting & Business Job Fair last week, and I’m not going to lie - it was overwhelming at first. So, here are five important tips for attending a career or job fair!

I had never taken an Interview 101 class but I always thought well how hard could it be? It was all fun and games until I heard no responses and had been turned down repeatedly, I felt embarrassed for myself. That was until one day, my professor gave me life changing advice. That morning It had been a week since I had my last interview and i still heard nothing back from that great organization; I felt hopeless for the whole day. Until one day my professor gave me interview tips that changed me forever. And guess what? They still rejected me. Just kidding I got the position and it was the best internship experience of my life. I wish someone had given me advice earlier, so here are some tips that I so confidently believe will get you that position!

If you’re an incoming freshman at UCR, you have the option of being in a learning community. These learning communities vary for your college, depending on if you’re in CHASS, CNAS, or BCOE. Although there are separate learning communities for each college, they all have the same goal - to prepare you for success at UCR and beyond. I personally was in a CHASS learning community my first three quarters here as a freshman, so this blog on the pros and cons of learning communities will be from that perspective.

My professor recently told me that in order to receive extra credit in her class, I would have  to form a study group with four other students. At first I was annoyed, thinking why do I have to study with other students who I don’t even know. Then I thought, hmm maybe studying with a group will be beneficial, which lead me to make a pros and cons list. Below are the list of pros and cons for studying alone vs. studying in a group.

One of the biggest things that sets a savvy student apart from the rest is utilizing office hours. Right around midterms and finals, students flood Profs’ offices, and they often have no idea what to say or do once they are face to face with the professor or TA. With these tips and tricks, the rest of us students can become one of those savvy students in no time.

The University of California system is a collection of unique and respectable institutions scattered across our great state *cue the Star Spangled Banner* We contribute to research and global diversity by encouraging everyone and anyone to apply. Become a Banana Slug, Bruin, or Highlander *inconspicuous cough* and you can be a part of something bigger than yourself.

But first there are several steps to your goal of presidency/global peace making/ect.

The summer before my first year at UCR I made it my mission to develop healthy eating habits and exercise plans.

The food in res halls is abundant and plentiful so thankfully you’ll never go hungry. However, unless you possess massive self control, that favorite pair of jeans worn in every Instagram picture since 2k13 will be lacking in breathing room.
