Perhaps it’s because he wants to acknowledge that he might be wrong before correcting it, or he just doesn’t want to say that grian is wrong directly.
And when Grian mentioned etho, he said they had been talking earlier about what it would be like if they could meet etho in person. that *earlier* part. I’m guessing this refers to just the past couple of days, which means other hermits in Seattle were likely participated in this conversation, and they collectively reached a consensus, that they didn’t think meeting Etho would be a good idea. Who was part of this conversation, and did they all really feel that way…

readmore in case i get around to doing a transcript. also, full disclosure, i swear on my life i looked so long for non-ethubs clips and i left out a considerable sampling of both armor- and horse-related competition because it didn't focus on being better than you; similarly, one clip of nebris saying he's better didn't make it (no response from etho) and etho explaining his ping contributing to losing to pause in uhc also didn't feel about being "better" enough. so there are other instances but they were weak. etho and bdubs are just, um, Like That, and bdubs is a big exception to etho's sense of politeness.

been meditating a lot on etho's documented* bdubs-induced self identity anxiety/guilt complex that characterizes solely their post-nHo interactions for reasons I really genuinely cannot pinpoint. this is me connecting dots and not I think true but it's really funny to consider that bdubs is wrong often in his perception of etho but that is directly traceable to what particular self identity anxiety etho experiences (tnt collection is the funniest of these incidents) so when etho, who almost certainly has a more complete theory of mind of bdubs than the other way around, seems hesitant to claim he knows bdubs in that way and talks about wanting to quiz and test bdubs on his storage bc he has never seen bdubs put resource collection methodologies in his videos so it doesn't count as etho knowing it bc it's not direct it's just hearsay or whatever his awareness of his limited knowledge means that they're both right and wrong when bdubs claims etho knows him so perfectly and that bdubs understands etho like nobody else does (nobody does). if etho were a little more wrong, he'd be far more right. bdubs is wrong but has faith and therefore etho cares to rise to the image bdubs has of him - so who is chipping whom down into the builder/player/person the other wants them to be?

you answered an ethubs question about their anniversery (or lack thereof) and said you thought that they've had the talk about what does their relationship mean/what are they. Who do you think initiated that conversation? I've been writing them lately and I can't figure it out, I feel like they would just slowly morph into practically married without ever addressing it. I feel like etho wakes up one day and bdubs has been living there for the last five years and he never says anything
it very much comes down to how you view them but also how you view the other people on hermitcraft imo! i agree with you that if it was just the two of them then yeah it would naturally morph into that and i can 100% see them falling into a sort of relationship without any real discussion or acknowledgement of it, and i do think that's what would happen.
the problem for me arises with etho because of his own insecurities and obsessions around rules and playing roles (something that's also complicated by me headcanoning him as autistic and aromantic, and my own experiences in relationships as an autistic aspec person). while i don't know if he would think much of bdubs referring to him as his boyfriend/girlfriend/partner/whatever, there's another layer beyond that of other people then perceiving him as bdubs' boyfriend, and them as an item. and then all of the expectations one might traditionally have of what a romantic relationship should entail and involve.. it's not something i see etho being familiar with and i think trying to play that role would make his head spin, and it would recontextualise the entire relationship for him because what he's comfortable with is completely different from society's perception of what a relationship "should" be.
in my own personal "view" of things i think this would shut etho off a bit because what was previously a source of comfort would now suddenly be something complicated and strange and at times uncomfortable, but i don't think he would be the one to communicate it; i think it would have to be up to bdubs to notice etho's discomfort and confront him about it, leading to said discussion. whether or not they actually get an answer from that is a different conversation altogether- i think they both might gain a lot from leaving it up in the air! but yeah. i think a lot of people prefer to write them as just falling into things naturally, which makes a lot of sense to me and is probably the closest to how things have gone "in canon". not cause i expect an ethubs confession on screen or whatever, but just because that's the type of guys they are.
