Fun Lesbian Flag Facts
Since this is an inclusive sapphic space, let’s revisit some fun facts about the labrys lesbian flag and the history behind its symbolism:
1. It was created in 1999. The labrys lesbian flag was designed by graphic designer Sean Campbell and first appeared in the June 2000 Pride issue of the Gay and Lesbian Times.
2. The violet background has explicitly sapphic roots. Violets have been associated with love between women through the poetry of Sappho, whose work also gave us the modern words sapphic and lesbian.
3. The labrys predates the flag by decades. Lesbian feminists adopted the double-headed axe as a symbol during the 1970s. It represented female strength, independence and resistance, drawing partly upon its ancient associations with Minoan goddesses and the Amazons.
4. The black triangle is a reclaimed symbol. Under the Nazis, the inverted black triangle marked people classified as “asocial,” including women who violated prescribed gender and sexual norms. Lesbians later reclaimed it as a symbol of persecution, survival and defiance.
5. The flag was never originally a trans-exclusionary symbol. Whatever associations some people may attach to it today, its historical elements concern lesbian identity, feminist resistance and the reclamation of symbols used against gender-nonconforming women. This symbolism remains meaningful for all women and continues to be embraced by many people who identify as sapphics.
Personally, I think it remains one of the most visually striking lesbian flags ever created. The modern sunset flag is pretty, but this one looks as though lesbian history might actually defend itself. 🪓
