the reception to this storyline when the episode hasn’t even aired yet is quite telling. i am with you, i am wary too, but some of you really need to take a pause.
addicts are still people.
addicts are still deserving of basic human empathy and decency.
talking about addiction from a place of judgment or superiority only reinforces the exact stigma that keeps people from getting help in the first place.
addiction doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and it’s not a choice. it’s not just about willpower or a lack of it, and it’s not something you can understand by reducing it to a single cause or a decision.
you don’t have to like this storyline. you don’t have to feel comfortable with it. but discomfort doesn’t justify a lack of empathy. if your reaction is one that dehumanizes people struggling with addiction, it’s worth asking yourself why.
