I have a lot of feelings about how GOT ended, but specifically I feel very confused by how the writers chose to handle Arya and Gendry’s romance since it seems they went out of their way to build something up just to tear it down (or at the very least leave it painfully unfinished). I’ll be eternally grateful for the canon, gif-able moments of them flirting, eye-fucking, kissing, banging, and professing their love, but objectively, the only thing that needed to be paid off was them reuniting in Winterfell. Beyond that, no one expected or demanded all that we got between them. The writers decided to spend copious amounts of valuable screen time in an already short season to develop their relationship. To give them meaningful, lengthy, nuanced interactions. To involve Sandor as a constant thematic presence in their moments. Arya’s arc of reuniting with her family, defeating death (both literally and metaphorically), choosing her own life path; and Gendry’s arc of fighting in The Great War and becoming a legitimized Baratheon could’ve been it. Their storylines could’ve been entirely separate from each other. Them not explicitly ending up together is ultimately a pointless 360 turn to bring them back to where they could’ve stayed at the start of the season. From a “ships don’t matter” perspective that is clearly shared by D&D, they wasted time and money to disappoint a fanbase that only ever wanted a conversation between their favorite characters, and I cannot find the logic in it.
