Janelle Monae — who last week released her album Dirty Computer — clarified that the pants she wore in her “PYNK” music video weren’t necessarily meant to simulate a vagina, and also clarified that her femme anthem is for all women, no matter what genitals they possess.

“Sometimes I think people interpret those as vagina pants, they call them vulva pants, they call them flowers, but it just represents some parts of some women,” Monae told People. “There are some women in the video that do not have on the pants, because I don’t believe that all women need to possess a vagina to be a woman. I have one I’m proud of it, but there’s a lot of policing and controlling that people are trying to have over our vaginas and when you think about female genital mutilation, when you think about all these women’s issues, I wanted to make sure we were discussing these issues but we were also celebrating each other.”

When “PYNK” was first released, Monae’s co-star (and rumored girlfriend) Tessa Thompson voiced her support for trans women.

This is not even the news being news, as a person who can read Russian I can sadly confirm the information. Also, seconding the reblog before mine - DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT MESSAGE PEOPLE DIRECTLY ABOUT IT. YOU CAN PUT THEM IN DANGER BY DOING THAT. Especially if using any Russia-based messaging app/social media. Russian police are assholes they are known to confiscate things they are not allowed to confiscate and request and get the information they are not allowed to get and generally ignore the same laws they are supposedly enforcing. The less evidence they can get by legal or illegal means, the better.

There is not a lot of people from Russia subscribed to me or even a lot of just people who are subscribed to me in general, but the more information is spread about this, the better. If you know any LGBT people living in Russia or Chechnya (Especially Chechnya!) you probably should reblog this.

Russian newspapers and human rights groups report that more than 100 gay men have been detained “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such” as part of a purge. Several people were also reportedly feared dead following violent raids.

Two television reporters, a waiter, and numerous other men ranging in age from 16 to 50 have been reported missing from the state of Chechnya, in Russia.

In one instance, a 16-year-old boy was detained but reappeared later with severe injuries from being beaten.

Human rights activists in the area believe that authorities have been arresting and killing the missing men, all of whom are believed to be gay.

in college, i was an unpaid intern of aclu’s immigrants’ rights project. the project was working on a class action lawsuit against prolonged detention of immigrants, but there were only 4(?) attorneys and the two head attorneys were rich white people who couldn’t deign to address us. everyday, the aclu would receive long letters from detainees describing their unjust situations. i thought about how these people had to put in scarce resources in order to write these letters, probably because the aclu had some PR campaign or other making it seem like that would be a useful thing for them to do, and how they had no idea the only person who would read their letters was the unpaid college intern. after summarizing the info in a database, i would send the detainees a slipshod photocopy of smaller non-profits in their state that might be able to help them.
