I remember exactly how this hug felt. How he smelled. The kind of things he would say that would make me laugh and think at the same time. He was wise, strong and hard working. We always marveled at how someone could make it to 95 after spending a lifetime smoking regularly, drinking soda, eating red meat and all of that but we knew his will to live came from his yearning to always be there for my grandmother. One of the most recent stories I've heard about him is when he returned from the hospital a few weeks ago and despite the fact he had such little energy, he was shouting to her from the door when he returned home, telling her not to worry because he's back. My timeline has been a pretty glum place for the last 24 hours, loaded with posts of mourning and honor.. you've gotta understand, so many of us that are wired a certain way and have bonded from all over the world united by our love of and contributions to a culture that embraces the creative genius of the outcasts and misfits.. we lost someone very influential and important. This is a gladiator helmet from a halloween costume I bought and cut and spray painted to rock with a hoodie as the supervillain one year because it was the coolest costume I could think of. It's gonna hang out in my tree until I take it down this year and then it's my son's to do with as he sees fit. The mask represents creativity, fearless individualism, independence and the reinvention of a man who was cast aside by an industry that profited off of his pain. Instead of quitting on the art he tapped into an energy that manifested within and created something that strangers from all over the globe would revere for decades to follow. This self proclaimed villain was a hero to so many of us.
