She grinned and laughed. “I’m glad. Would you like anything else Lo? I might have some fruit somewhere if you’d like.”

He took another drink from the cider. "Do you have any apples?" He thought that they might since Ruby had said her Granny pressed their own cider. That implied that they had apples.

Red nodded, grinning as she walked towards the kitchen. “Granny always presses her own cider. It takes so much longer than getting it from town but she says it tastes better.” She shrugged and placed the cup on the table. “I hope you like it .”

"Thank you." Lo took the cup that Red placed on the table and took a drink from it. "It's very good. Possibly the best cider I've had."

"I would like some cider," Lo said, smiling. He was eager to return home since he didn't really belong in this magical world and he had plans for his future that he wanted to fulfill. But he also knew that if he could, he would return to visit Red, because in the short time that they'd known each other, he was starting to think of her as a friend. And he wanted to bring her a Bible like he'd just promised.

Ruby smiled, nodding as she took the plant from him. “You’re welcome. I’m really happy for you.” She kissed his forehead and ruffled his hair. “Be good. I’m just gonna go in the forest to eat these okay. I don’t want you to have to watch. It’s never fun watching people die.”

She smiled softly and looked down at the plant. “Promise that you won’t be too sad okay? You’re gonna win. I’m so proud of you. I helped a little but you really did most of it on your own.”

Ruby looked down at the berries, swirling them in her fingers. “Remember to stay awesome.” She grinned and began to walk towards the forest.

He hadn't wanted to give the yellow plant to her, didn't want to do nothing but watch Ruby walk in the direction of the forest where she planned to poison herself. She was right that he didn't want to have to watch her die, but he also didn't feel right just standing there, knowing what she was going to do and not trying to stop her. Nothing could possibly feel right, not when there could only be one survivor.

"I'll make you proud," he said as he watched her walk away from her. It was the one thing that he could do. He would live his life and would do his best to have a good life and to be happy. Ruby was giving up her chances at having a good life so that he could return back home, and he knew that he couldn't let her down after her sacrifice.

When he'd told her he would never forget her, Lo meant that. He would make sure to remember her, and he knew that he would do everything he could to make sure that he made the most out of the life that she was giving him.

Ruby smiled and shook her head softly. “Lo you know I have to. If you don’t want to kill me that’s fine, I’ll just run off and do it, but I need to do it. I’ve had an awesome life but you’re still just a kid. You need to keep going remember?”

She smiled down to him, sighing lightly as she hugged him once again. “It’s gonna be okay. You’ll stop missing me eventually and this will just be a thing that happened and made you a kick ass person. Just don’t become like some of the mentors and be distant okay? Be good.”

Ruby tried to keep her sadness out of her voice but it cracked when she spoke. “Just take care of yourself.” She brushed his bangs away from his forehead and kissed his skin softly. “If I had a little brother I’d want him to be you.” Ruby smiled and pointed towards his bag. “Do you have the berries? You don’t have to watch.”

He still didn't move to get the berries right away, not wanting what he knew was going to happen actually to happen. There was another way of course. He could die, and Ruby could win the games. He was the one who had the poisonous yellow plants, it would be simple enough for him to take them out and eat them instead of handing them over. But despite not wanting Rudy to die, Lo didn't want to die either.

Maybe if Ruby hadn't spent the whole games telling him how she would make sure he won it, Lo would have been more tempted to save her instead of himself. Thinking about it though, he had a feeling that if he let her win, that Ruby would be upset about his actions. No matter what he did, he knew that it was going to feel wrong.

Lo slid the backpack off of his shoulders and opened it, pulling out the yellow plants. For a moment he stared at them before closing his fist around them and staring at Rudy, not yet offering them to her.

"Thank you." He said, "For everything. I don't think I would have made it this far without you helping me. You became my friend, and I'll never forget you, ever. I just wish there was a way that I could save you."

"I don’t know who that person is either. We have a lot of gods that we believe in. Some prefer a different group than others. We have… Odin.. Zeus… Anubis.. Those are all from different groups though."

Lo could try and explain his religion to her in more detail since she didn't seem to know anything about it but he decided on another idea instead. "If we get enough beans that I can come visit you again, I'll bring you a Bible."

The Only Ones Remaining - Ruby and Lo

She felt terrible. Ruby had promised to kill for Lo so he wouldn’t have that load to bear, but she was too late. The fallen tribute lay at her friends feet, blood pouring out of the wound. She looked back up, realizing that they were the last two in the arena.

Ruby was proud of herself, mostly for keeping her promise to him and helping him stay alive but also for making it so far. Now it was her turn to die. She didn’t blame Lo, she wanted it to happen, but not at his hands.

She rushed to her friend, hugging his tightly as she laughed. “Lo you did it. You won. I’m so happy for you. Just remember to stay good okay? Don’t let the fame swell your head.” Ruby chuckled as she wiped the tears away from her eyes. She looked around, trying to decide the best way to die. “I think the berries would be best. Probably less painful and definitely quickest. Do you still have some for me?”

Ruby grinned, kissing his forehead, as any proud, big sister would as she ruffled his hair lightly. “Go home, have a great life. If you have a daughter name her something awesome okay?”

When he turned to face her, Lo hadn't expected her to be so excited, or to run up to him, telling him how happy she was for him, and asking him for some of the berries.

He didn't smile or grin like she was, the hand the held his bow hung on his side and he made no move to attack her. He wouldn't, couldn't, wasn't sure that he could even hand the berries that he still had, but that he did not want to give her. Ruby was his friend, and he didn't want her to die.

"Ruby-" He started to talk but then stopped, not sure what he could do or say. There was nothing that he could do to change the way that the games worked. Only one of them was going to survive, and it was clear that Ruby expected it to be him. She'd always said that, from the beginning, that she was going to help him win. But Lo was conflicted. He didn't want to die, and he was sure Ruby couldn't really want to die either. But as much as he didn't want to die, he didn't want to lose his friend.

Not yet ready to do anything, he just said the first thing that came to his mind. "I don't want you to die."

Red grinned, nodding in silence for a moment before she spoke again. “I have no idea what a bible is.” She laughed as she leaned against the table, shaking her head. “Is it a book of your history?”

"In a way," Lo said. He wondered how she knew the story if she didn't know what a Bible was, but he didn't ask, decided to just try and explain it to her. "But not recent history. All the stories in the Bible happened a while ago, and are about God and Jesus."

She shrugged, smiling softly. “There’s a lot. Here, neverland, the land of the fairies.. There’s a lot.” Red thought for a moment before nodding. “We might. There was a story about a man who gathered animals onto a big boat and it rained for a long time. Is that from your land?”

A lot of lands. That wasn't what Lo had been picturing. Since believing that it was possible he could be in a land that was not his own, he had only been picturing their being his land and this land. Although thinking about it now, it did make sense in a strange way that if there were two lands, there could be more than two lands. "It is," he said, smiling at the description of a familiar story. "It's from the Bible."

The Only Ones Remaining - Ruby and Lo

A cannon sounded over the arena. Lo stood there, frozen, bow in his hand, staring at the body of the tribute who lay on the ground in front of him. He wasn't moving. No, of course he wasn't moving. The cannon wouldn't have sounded if he wasn't dead.

Everything was silent then. Too silent. Because Lo didn't want to move, didn't want to face what he knew now was going to happen. Somehow, he felt it was easier to stand there, frozen, staring at the dead body of a boy only a few years older than he was, not yet having been taken away by the gamemakers.

His hands trembled, because he had just killed someone, acted out of fear and instant, fired the arrow without really thinking. What other choice had he? It was kill or be killed. So he had killed.

But this wasn't the end. For a moment, Lo closed his eyes, willing himself away from this place, back home to district eleven. If he closed his eyes he could think of a better place, a better time. Before his name had been drawn, no, before George's name had been drawn, a time when his world had not yet fallen apart.

Lo knew he couldn't stay here, he had to face it. The math was already done, had been done before the cannon sounded, before his arrow had found its mark. The day had started with four tributes alive in the arena. Two had died. Two remained.

Opening his eyes, Lo slowly turned to face Ruby.

Red placed the full bowl in front of Lo, grinning as she sat across from him. “Mostly stories about other lands. A lot of history with dragons and everything. I’m guessing you have a lot of make believe stories like that in your land.”

Lo wasn't surprised that they had books about dragons, at least, not after everything else she'd already told him that day. But he quickly caught the meaning in the words she used before talking about books about the history of dragons. "Other lands? How many are there? Do you have books about my land?"

"I'd like some soup." He was a little bit hungry, and the soup that they'd eaten earlier had been good. And he wasn't really tired enough to go to sleep yet. "What books do you have?" Lo doubted that they were books he would be familiar with.
