love when an absolute nightmare of a character is introduced and all you can think is "jesus christ buddy what the hell is your problem" and the narrative gives you a hot minute to stew before explaining Exactly what is Their Problem. and you just sorta sit back in your metaphorical rocking chair and think "huh. yeah okay fair. that would do this to a person, yes."
A couple days ago I published a new story, which in itself is a sequel to a previously published fic: "Something to Lose"
This first story can stand on its own rather easily, but introducing... everything of THIS would have derailed a bit too much, so I decided to keep this new project self-contained in its own story and treat both of these as a SERIES :)
For context, I would recommend having read "Something to Lose" beforehand but I do suppose, with how it's going "In the Family" can also stand on its own.

But the brainworms have not been willing to let it go, so I figured I might as well tackle this. No, I do not have an ending planned for this, nor do I have any idea where it goes. I'm just... going with the flow. You're welcome to suffer along with me.

Finally got around to solving a possible timeline issue today, so the next couple chapters should be safe now, except for a couple of editing remarks to flesh out, and of course, where this Story is going to head in the end.

And no, I have no idea where or for how long this is still gonna go.
But the VoE announcement kind of put me in a hurry, to get ahead before the new lore scrambles everything I had worked out when it drops xD
This one makes a mention regarding the ending of the JW story, though I tried to keep the spoilers low.
(One of the reasons the opening of this chapter might feel a bit jarring at the moment, but I might go back and edit that once some time has passed :) )
Chapter 10 is now up, and it's a double package. I'd originally planned this one as two separate pieces but thought it would mesh better as one big update :)
I've been toiling away forever on a little continuity issue from the followup chapter, but I think I've solved the whole ordeal to a point where I can finally share this now :D

I really really love in game music events but the guild wars 2 metal legion concert just blows the competition out of the water for me. the fact that it's integrated into the storyline for the area with the songs being in universe propaganda is fascinating and the event itself is like hands down the best and most fun way to do an event like that I've ever experienced. you spend the whole time trying to keep the show going which means constant chaotic mini events where you do things like jump in a moshpit or stand in for backup dancers or fix the exploding equipment while all the while beating back fans swarming the performers whose parts of the song will disappear if they get knocked out. it ends with you having to destroy a giant burning metal effigy of a dragon that will sometimes just pick you up into the air and chuck you into the crowd who are all giant cat people. everyone on earth download the video game guild wars 2.

for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.
Neural Nets have existed for decades and are genuinely useful. It's a form of AI that recognizes patterns, and can do stuff like identify cancer cells, tell whether an egg is fertilized or not, detect fraud, and optimize routes.
Those are Expert Systems, tuned to do exactly one thing. If you (say) ask a medical expert system a question about financial law, it's useless. The autopilot that flies a 787 has no idea how to drive a truck on the freeway. A Coulter Counter is excellent at identifying lymphocytes in a blood sample but can't predict the next card in a blackjack game.
And so on.
The problem with so-called generalized AI (AGI) is that we don't have that yet. It doesn't exist. It MIGHT some day, but AGI has been "10 years away" since the 1980s. The goals keep moving as we learn more about how people and machines process data.
But the current crop of AI techbros have been selling generative Large Language Model AI (LLM) as AGI because generative systems do a good job of faking it. There's no actual thought going on, merely the illusion of thought via predicting the next word in a sentence accurately.
If you let a human toddler listen to 800 hours of YouTube car influencer videos, that toddler might end up sounding like a car influencer. They'd parrot horsepower numbers and 0 to 60 times, mention EV range and MSRP numbers.
But they wouldn't understand any of it.
That's ChatGPT.
And yeah, it's worse than useless because it doesn't even know when it's lying or hallucinating. It just babbles convincingly until you stop it.
But for techbros to make money selling that as "AI"? It's the perfect scam, especially if you don't understand how it works.
I don't want my cellphone to have AI I want it to have 3 days of battery time. I don't want my computer to have AI preinstalled I want it to have seven usb ports and high ram at affordable price. I don't want my games to have AI built levels I want them to be so optimized I could run them on a nokia.

i feel like people aren't getting how dire ai is. we are running out of drinkable water. our brains aren't engaging as much with what we see and hear. people near data centers don't get clean water and experience electricity blackouts. it's being used to make pornography of underaged people and women. it often just lies. it affirms everything. it lies. it has made people kill themselves. it lies for gods sake. and people act as if im dramatic for being staunchly against it. 'now i KNOOW you hate ai and whatever, but look at this cute video' this isn't me being a new age puritan about internet videos, this is about the fucking earth and our future living on this planet. people are suffering now, people will suffer more, and my friends and parents will roll their eyes and think im annoying for despising ai so explicitly. we need to wake up because we cannot live like this
