Hot take about the new evidence document, Coyle does know how to spell, he’s just on so much medication (combined with immense paranoia) and that’s why he’s spelling phonetically, he can’t think straight. It wasn’t uncommon for Klansmen to be well educated, most of them were, despite Coyle having attended military school and living in the south. He doesn’t come across as stupid when he speaks generally, he has a very large vocabulary and he knows a lot of facts, even if he has a few silly lines here and there. He has very nice handwriting, and he doesn’t seem to misspell anything on the evidence boxes. Plus, police officers are taught to take notes quickly, so he probably knows that it’s better to write out all the facts than worry about it being perfect, because this note is still legible despite the misspellings. So, no, Coyle isn’t stupid, nor is he illiterate, he’s just on so many drugs (courtesy of Murkoff) that he can’t think properly, but he needs to get his thoughts down because he’s trying desperately to differentiate fact from fiction.
