She wiped the back of her hand across her forehead, smearing blood across her pale skin as she brushed a lock of hair from her eyes and murmured calm instructions to the soldier writhing under her hands. It was a minor wound, really, a ricochet that had caught him so firmly in the thigh that she’d have thought whatever pain he was in had him ready to beg them to amputate the leg entirely. “Easy, love. Easy. You’re fine, alright? Absolutely fine. We’ve stopped the bleeding, the bullet’s out. You’ve gotta breathe, understand? Or you’re going to pass out on the cot and neither of us wants that.” He stilled under her hands and she offered him a brief, brilliant smile as she stepped back to allow the doctor to finish their work.
She stepped out of the medical tent with a cheerful grin, waving happily to the first person to meet her eyes, “Evenin’,” She paused to check the watch turned towards the inside of her wrist, “Well, mornin’ I suppose is more accurate. Don’t suppose it’s too early for a bit of a drink, is it?”
Levi stood in front of the med tent, his head tipped slightly back as he examined a tree several yards away in a much needed moment of idleness. He exhaled, the smoke from his cigarette dispersing into the air in front of him, clouding his view for just a moment before floating away. He knew it was an unhealthy habit, one that could kill him, but did it really matter in the grand scheme of things? It’s not like he expected to make it home, anyway.
He took another drag from the nearly finished smoke and held it for a moment, thinking back to how unexpectedly chaotic the day had been. The unit that passed through had more wounded soldiers than not and he and the rest of the medical staff had spent the better part of the day patching people up, removing the occasional limb, and providing the rare but unfortunate final comforts.
Suffice to say, it was a long day.
He looked over at the sound of footsteps that cut through the rare, but stark, quiet. He gave the nurse that exited the tent a polite smile. “Is it morning already? The time seemed to fly by,” he said. He let out a breath of laughter at her question. “Not after the day we have had, I don’t think so.”
