Itās late but Iām mad so
I do not understand why some people think it is up to them which groups should be included in the LGBT+ community.
This goes for trans, this goes for asexuals/aromantics, this goes for bisexuals, etc.
The LGBT+ community is not a fun clubhouse, it is not an after school club. You are not the judge of which groups are HISTORICALLY part of this community.
Iāve seen posts about why āxā group shouldnāt be part of the community and comments like āthatās so well saidā and āsuch a good point.ā
NO! THEY ARE ALREADY PART OF THE COMMUNITY. ITS NOT UP TO YOU.
And because this post was inspired by a post about trans people on Instagram: THIS COMMUNITY WAS MADE BY TRANS PEOPLE.
Look up Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson. They were both self identifying ļæ¼drag queens and you owe them A LOT OF THANKS FOR THIS COMMUNITY!
Itās not up to the people already part of this community to educate you or defend themselves.
I am so fucking angry that this type of gatekeeping prevails.
the community is for same sex attracted people. that's it. saying trans people created the modern LGBT community is both wrong and America centric.
It was said that trans individuals are historically a part of the LGBTQ community, and while this community wasn't "made" by them, you can't pretend they weren't a significant role in activism and rioting, especially stonewall. In the wake of the riots, Johnson and Rivera (two transgender women, although transgender was not a term at the time and so they identified in labels such as drag queen and transvestite) were frequent organizers and participants at gay rights protests. They also founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, or STAR, and opened a house to shelter homeless LGBT youth ā the first shelter of its kind in the country. As the AIDS crisis devastated the LGBT community in the 1980s, Johnson continued her work, marching with activist group ACT UP, helping at fundraisers and nursing her friends on their death beds. I think it's deplorable to take transgender people, take a look at all they've done for the community throughout history and in modern day, and then decide that they don't belong anymore just because they aren't always same sex attracted. There is no use for anyone in separating up the LGBTQ community, a community that should be working towards inclusivity and support for one another, unless your end goal is to take precious attention and resources and put them on to only one section of the community instead of helping everyone as a whole. We need to bring eachother up, not tear eachother down to save ourselves.
marsha P Johnson was a self proclaimed gay man. he said he wasn't a woman. transsexual was a term at the time so there really is no excuse
I apologize if my post was misinformed, however that doesn't really take away from my point. Johnson still advocated for trans rights, as did Rivera, and what they did and fought for isn't something to be swept under the rug because "the community is for same sex attracted people." Terms like transvestite, transsexual and transgender likely weren't as easily separable then, and the T in STAR was later changed to stand for transgender by Rivera. I'm not sure what you're saying there is no excuse for - no excuse for them being drag queens not trans? - but the point still stands that transgender people were included in LGBT rights through history, and it should stay that way, because all removing them does is tear up a community for no reason. Transgender rights were fought for alongside LGBTQ rights and although they almost always went hand in hand, I doubt transgender individuals were fighting for one and not the other - hence them being a important part of the community. Perhaps they weren't all well recognised, but they were most definitely there.
