I have this gut feeling that Dante following Vergil to ‘keep an eye on him’ isn’t because he thinks his brother is incapable, by any means, it’s because they want to fight without Nero trying break them up (and possibly set up a scenario where bloody palace is sort of canon this time? Maybe). Just get it out of their systems. And you know Nero ain’t gonna play that shit anymore and is gonna be jumping in if they even look like they want to have a friendly spar.
