option one, of course, is necro stratt and cav grace. well, I say "cav" grace, he has genuinely quite good combat skills but he's never trained with a rapier, people just always assume he's her cavalier. then there's a bit of a "counterfactual where babs ate a bad clam and died" scenario where stratt's cavaliers primary and secondary both suddenly turn up dead, and she really really Needs to ascend, and now, like right now. and grace tries to say "uhh umm I don't know the rapier and you'll have a really bad time trying to assimilate my soul!!!" and she says "we'll have time to learn the rapier together as one after we don't get obliterated by cytherea the first, and no I won't, I know you too well and you won't actually let me get hurt." and then she becomes eva ryland, saint of light.
option two, which is harder to make fit but has a few upsides, is necro grace and cav stratt where grace's aptitude is so low-level that he's never bothered to foster it and barely even remembers it's there most of the time. while I'm imagining option one as taking place in a kind of lyctoral trials-like situation, this feels like more of a battlefield scenario a la the paulening: a resurrection beast is imminently bearing down and some sort of nonsense just took out the two resident necros. grace is panicking like "oh god oh god we're doomed we're out of necromancers," stratt is exceedingly calm and says "no, we have a necromancer." grace says "I absolutely cannot help in this situation, it's so far beyond my capabilities," stratt says "there's a simple way to expand your capabilities." he very suddenly understands what she's getting at keeps trying to plead "no, no, I can't, it won't work, I'm not good enough, if you do this then I'm not even gonna try," and she says "Yes You Are, you would never let my sacrifice go to waste. this is the easiest decision I've ever made, you just need to let me in" and falls on her sword. she was, of course, right, and he becomes ryland eva, saint of courage. and yes he DOES lobotomize himself about it.
