The photo archive of my choice for the month isĀ Flip Schulkeās DocumericaĀ that is on theĀ U.S National Archives Flickr Page. I chose this archive because it focuses on everyday life during the 1970s. The focus of this archive is mainly on older people living in Florida and Minnesota. The photos within the archive are of people shopping, relaxing, even playing games such as bingo. I love the color of the film and the relaxed aura within the photos. I often reflect back on certain times and wonder what the scene was like and how people lived their lives and this archive does just that.Ā

In researching a new website with a wide variety of archives from all over and from different time periods, I found a few that particularly caught my attention. These collections caught my attention, not just as an artist but also as a future art educator. There are a few examples of photos from the collections I researched and read through, they all have a theme of illustration and experimentation. I am always open to trying new styles of creating art, and I am on the verge of trying out the waters of illustration. I am particularly interested the collections above to apply them to planning lessons and or to create posters of these to hang around my future art classroom. Some of the images from the collections are from videos, movie posters, and even sketches for magazine covers. This type of exploration is key to break the mold of only finding paintings as inspiration.Ā

I strive to inquire the weight and emphasis of text on past movie posters on N. LBJ Dr. This will be accomplished through the use of scale and asymmetrical balance.
This months archival post is focused on the works ofĀ RenĆ© Magritte. The dreaminess of his works coupled with the fact that he was interested in distorting the audiences perception of reality is inspiring. His works appear as if they were taken out of the context of someones dream. Odd objects and people are placed on the canvas and in ways that would make a person do a double take. Within his works, it appears as if there is a mystery that needs to be solved. I came across his work through social media over the years and have recently touched on the topic in my modern art history class. I am fascinated with surrealism and hope to gain inspiration from major and small artists within the movement.Ā
These are some of the examples of my experimentation with the color gels. I played with full color emersion and partial color in a few photos.
These are the photos that I took with my color gels. I decided to highlight and focus on the light that surrounds me, specifically my dorm room. Somewhere where I live and surround myself with.
Color Essay
The focus of this essay is geared towards the works of Dan Flavin and his emphasis on color within his artworks. Dan Flavin's light artworks stand out in galleries and public spaces for his experimental use of fluorescent lighting and bright colors. Flavinās use of color and sculpture transforms the space it is in by offering a soft diffusion of light and engaging with its surroundings. Due to his groundbreaking structures, this makes Dan Flavin a pioneer who influenced major artists like James Turrell and Jenny Holzer.
Dan Flavin started making art made with light bulbs in 1961 after a series of drawings and paintings, and by 1963 he began using his iconic fluorescent tubes as his medium. Flavin was restricted to colors other than red, blue, green, pink, yellow, ultraviolet, and white(Bell, Govan, p.19). By restricting himself he explored the identities and space of color. He started by experimenting with the color green in one of his projects because to him āit is a pleasant color.. Brillitan as fluorescent light and soft in the total barrierā (Bell, Govan, p.58). After noticing that the Green light from one of his projects changed into a rose color as a person turned towards the sunlight, Flavin then realized that the ārelative and continuously changing visual perception of the color of ambient lightā was āanother extension of the artistic properties ā (Bell, Govan, p.58) of Flavin's light-colored spaces.
Flavin expanded his art by including architecture with colored fluorescent lights. Considered ābarriersā, this physically puts color in the same room with its viewer, almost as if it's another person in the same room. As color fills the room it āengulfs its audienceā all while the āmixing of colors literally occurs in spaceā (Salomon, p.964). Flavinās art is more than just looking at a lamp, the colored light occupies every inch of the room and interacts with the audience and the space surrounding it. Through adding color and architecture, Flavin reveals the functionality behind the aesthetics of colored fluorescent lights. He understood that color can create a āvariety of moods and atmospheresā (Salomon, p.965). Flavin revealed colors' true physical and mental form, rather than keeping color in one box he left it out in the open to swallow the room whole.
Being able to change how people perceive what some may consider ājust a colored lampā is a grand achievement. To Dan Flavin, it was not just about color. It was how color can change rooms and feelings, to emphasize how color ruled his world. To be able to feel color and not just āseeā it, is what many people experienced when they walked into one of Dan Flavins' exhibitions.

My monthly archival set is focused on the work of Henri Matisse. I encountered his work through my History of Modern Art class, and from there I researched his work through Artstor.com. His works belong to the Fauvism movement and broke molds for how art should be produced around the 1930ā²s. A majority of his paintings were produced with oil on canvas. IĀ am in love with how light and almost nostalgic his artwork comes across. It is pastel, flowy, and natural. The colors in his work seem very modest and calm, almost as if I can just walk right in and be embraced by the warmness in his works. Some of these works appear as if I am looking through a window of time as these women are in their own world focusing on their tasks or as if I am another person in the room that these women are also in. This set means a lot to me as it shows me how to create a sense of perspective, a sense of lingering, but in a discrete way.Ā
Color walk Essay
On my hour-long walk within the quiet and cookie-cutter suburban life that my parents currently reside in, I could not help but notice a reoccurring pattern. That is the bleak colors of what was once a forest with tall pine trees, doe's, and birds now sits a site some consider "urban hell".
Whether it was the sky reflecting the colors of the neighborhood or just the color palette of a new society of houses, it was all the same colors. The houses, hedges, trash bins, driveways, mailboxes were all the same mundane color scheme. Nothing stood out and everything blended together. I can construct a story of a small, boring, and average life beyond the walls of the "perfect" suburban house in the middle class.
In a world where the HOA can fine you out of a few hundred dollars for simply leaving your trash bin unattended for a few days in a row or for planting flowers that do not comply with their aesthetics, there are very few colors that stood out to me within my environment. Though a color I noticed first was Green. The lawns are all the same bright green color with minimal lawns meeting the unnatural color expectations. I assume water bills are high just to meet the same color swatch every other person has on their property. I also noticed Gray second. Gray driveways, sidewalks, lamp posts, and mailboxes. So boring, so mundane. One would think that color was illegal in gated communities.
I noticed one of the most natural of colors last while on my walk, which was Brown. Every brick on the exterior of the houses was a shade of Brown, every front door was dark brown oak, and every garage door was painted with one paint shade throughout the neighborhood. Color does not appear to change during my walk. Everything was muddied together almost like a dirty stream in the Ozarks.
After my walk, I realized that my life does not have to consist of one color palette. It can consist of Oranges, Pinks, and Yellows. Whether I choose to surround myself with unnatural colors or not, it is my choice to experiment with colors that one might not naturally view on their own excursion outside.
The color collages I made during my class time consisted of the two provided above. I went with a monochromatic/analogous color scheme with the second photo to illustrate a theme of innocence/youth. My youth was shared with my younger sister of just one year younger than me, we were raised wearing primarily Pink and the room we shared had matching pink bedsheets and pink walls. Regarding the first collage I used Pink and Green to emphasize a complimentary color scheme. I wanted to capture the striking differences between the color Green compared to the light and airy hues of Pink.
Black
i. Shoes
Black, the color I wear on my feet every day. Well worn in, off white dingy laces, scuffed soles, and yet there is still life left to give each time I wrap the laces around each other to head out into the world. Neutral is itās personality, which is why it deserves much appreciation from the wearer, with seemingly ānothing to wearā at all times.Ā
ii. Cellphone
Black and an off-black to match with it, is my phone. Covered in a case that has seen itsā better days, the phone looks relatively new since itsā purchase about a year ago. Under the casesā skin, stickers litter the surface of the back of my phone. The contents within hold laughter, embarrassment, and experiences to be relived over and over again.Ā
iii. Purse
A faux leather satchel with a sling on it to walk around with only my basic necessities when out and about is what I take with me whenever I need. I can see the small creases around the corners from the love the previous owner gave to the bag, silver buttons and clasps are on the surface, and small interior pockets line the inside of my bag. Only holding my wallet and keys, I am free from responsibilities until I return back to my room.Ā
iv. Pens
Stationary devices that guide my adventure through my college life. Higher quality pens were purchased in the ice box that is New York City. As they sit in my pencil box in a bag I carry almost daily, they provide a sense of relief as I dig through my bag to scribble a quick thought or deadline. The click that is released as I use the pen gives me a sense of satisfaction, it sounds like a muted popping sound. Black pens are needed every where and is debated within the corporate world if Black or Navy pens are theĀ ārightā ones to use.
v. Backpack
Once a Black backpack, now an off-Black almost gray, is what I have used for the last 9 years of my academic career. Through thick and thin, rain and sun, and of course itsā heavy contents from time to time, my Jansport backpack has itsā battle scars and even a small slit on the bottom left side from who knows where and how. It slouches as it has lost its structure long ago, but it is now molded to my own vertebrae
vi. Keyboard
The black keyboard coated in little white scribbles sits within my laptop. Used daily, I depend on it to get me through my daily studies and nonstop stream of assignments. Thin keys are squished by my fingers, making a light clicking noise with every letter that is pressed. I have grown so used to my own keyboard that typing on raised keyboards can be a challenge as I have to make more of an effort to move my fingers when typing.Ā
vii. Luggage
The large Black, almost ominous, suitcase rests in my dorm roomsā closet. Covered in geometric raised lines and a slightly glittery skin. Taken on a recent trip, it has small white scuffs on the bottom side most likely due to airport attendants trying to get through their shift. It is missing itsā carry on twin, and because of that I am on the hunt for it to fill the missing piece.Ā
Ā viii. TV Monitor
A small black tv monitor rests on my desk, the screen often lit during the night hours. Bright LEDās hum and create a small bright bubble around me when I study. Often turned on to give me company as I type away my assignments, it has become my friend when no one on my floor is awake.
ix. Coffee cart
Three feet tall and circular, a round coffee cart with three shelves and four wheels sits next to my desk. Holding my Keurig, sugar, teas and coffees I rely on it to create a warm atmosphere to my cold and white dorm room. The top shelf it tells a story with small coffee rings and sugar particles.Ā
x. Bed
Six feet tall, thin, and rectangular, my bed rests in the corner of my dorm room. Over the years it has seen itsā fair share of owners, I am another one on the list. Stiff, the mattress is instead covered in a layer of soft mattress topper and sheets of bedding. A White quilt and soft dĆ©cor pillows litter the top side of the mundane bed. It is welcoming on those long days and longer nights, it accepts me as one as I rest on it before my routine restarts.
The camera obscura project was a success! My group and I changed our plans last minute and even though it was on a whim, Iām happy to say that it worked. We decided on making a larger camera obscura that can be handheld and move with handles just to help balance the size and weight of the camera. After finishing up, with the help of my professor we added a small panel on the eyepiece with a small hole to block out extra light. This resulted in a more concentrated view of the outside world. I constructed a drawing with charcoal on a large pad to emphasize the values in what I saw through the camera obscura. My drawing was blocky and patchy but I appreciate it because it challenged what I typically do which is more detail oriented artworks.

My Claude Glass drawings consisted of my back wall & window with my clothes drying on my clothes rack. The second drawing is an angle of my bed from the wardrobe in my room. This was a fun assignment to check out perspective and shades. It was interesting trying to draw from what I saw from a perspective that was not in front of me.
The photo archive of my choice is DOCUMERICA - Dick Swanson through the U.S National Archives Flickr Page. I decided to go ahead and look into this particular archive. This archive stuck out to me because the photos seem preserved and similar to a time capsule. My parents were born in the 1970ā²s and I recall seeing photos shown to me by my mother of her in the 70ā²s and the film is the exact same color as the photos in this archive. I always wonder what itās like to see a time before my own. I wonder where the people are in these photos, how well they are doing in life right now and if they ever got the chance to see these photos. The background of these photos have environmental concerns. Seeing as how agencies had environmental issues back in the 1970ā²s has shown me that things have not changed in 50 years.Ā
