gay cafes as opposed to gay bars/clubs is a stupid debate because whilst I understand that you want a place to exist casually as a gay person where alcohol/sex isn't present, it misunderstands that gay bars and clubs facilitate romantic and sexual relationships and leisure for gay people in the same way clubs and bars do for straight people - which is to say, that there is a place you can go where you won't get fag bashed for making an advance on someone. you don't need a "gay cafe" because a cafe isn't a space where sex and shit takes place, it isn't a space that specifically, by design, excludes gay people in the way that a straight bar would. a cafe where it's "ok to be gay" is just... a cafe

I get this point and I agree that gay clubs are special and unique and important but gay cafes would also be a place to seek out romantic or sexual encounters but without the complications of alcohol or the overwhelming environment of a club. For people who don’t drink or can’t handle crowds, loud sound, or are looking to relax with a partner without being a spectacle, cafes offer a different space. I don’t know that people who want gay cafes to be more common want that INSTEAD of gay clubs and bars. I think it’s more of a “I want to be safely queer in more typical aspects of my life, like when I go get a coffee.” Having come of age at a time when people were not visibly “out” having a space where I could feel comfortable and safe (which I don’t feel in a club for a variety of reasons) would have made those first awkward forays into romance way easier. Also, historically, gay cafes were a place people met and had conversations about their lives a queer people and it truly made the gay community richer and more culturally vibrant. Have you ever tried discussing a film or book at a club? Cafes may not be spaces where sex and stuff take place, but it is a place of social and cultural connection, and these things underpin relationships. So for people who want more from a partner than sex, cafes that are for us are a place to get that.

The most palatable OR the absolute worst aspects and the most oversexualized. Like the L Word, which may tell lesbian stories, but does it through the lens of the male gaze- gratuitous nudity, storylines driven entirely by lust with emotion taking a back seat, consent as an afterthought, monogamy as impossible. There’s clearly a place for straight male viewers in this show that was supposed to be about lesbian/bi women. I’m still only in the middle of the classic show but depictions of people who are trans or do not fall neatly into a clear gender category are also represented as flat stereotypes who have been palatably sexualized.
