I'm only just starting into the book and I've never listened to the musical through (though I plan to when I finish the book).

#idk what to vote since I watched a TV adaptation first #then because I was a teen and it was in my bookshelf I read the abridged young adult version of the book #by ya I mean aimed at 12-18 group #i watched many TV adaptations before I watched the musical or read the full book #TV adaptations are often very focused on valjean and javert and make their relationship more personal #the musical has a nice focus on Les Amis and also make Javert and Valjean's relationship interesting on a personal level #the book has a LOT of details and I feel that if I didn't have previous attachment to some characters I wouldn't enjoy those characters as #much.#it also has way more characters and storylines and it's more a commentary rather than 'let's just watch 3 hours on stage that are supposed #to entertain the masses'#i like all versions because they all offer something different. but I also have very strict lines between the book the musical and TV #and i don't like mixing them #i'm a very much of the opinion that the book and the musical are two different things and both have slightly different messages #and different characterization #also different cast = different characterization/different acting choices

Pick one of James Baldwin's works and read it!!! The Fire Next Time is an excellent essay, most of us are familiar with the quote on gay white people from The Last Interview but not the rest of it. If Beale Street Could Talk even has a movie!
