SMS Faces App Review
There are a multitude of apps on the app store. SMS Faces came across as a nice surprise, the ability to use memes as text message responses allowed for humorous conversations. For most subjects there was a seemingly appropriate rageface associated with it. The app had a quick-switch function as well as a favorites library and a one-touch copy method which allowed for quick use of the rage faces. Open rage faces, copy appropriate face & paste into message. It was that easy and allowed for a lot of fun responses and creative conversations. It turned simple text conversations into a puzzle game, finding the perfect face in order to answer a said question or statement.Â
The app is a simple display, there are ads and the navigation can be semi-difficult. There are hundreds of faces and if you are unfamiliar with many memes, then navigating through them all can be daunting. However after establishing a decent repertoire of favorites can lead you to have your bread and butter faces which would allow for almost instantaneous responses.  The app has recently faded out of my daily use as it can grow tiring and less humorous, however I enjoyed it for a long period of time.
Spotify App Review
Very few apps make it into my daily rotation. The so-called must have apps are few and far in between. However, since becoming a member of spotify, I have realized that this is the only app I can say I use practically every time I use my phone. Music syncing and consistently updating my phone with itunes had become one of the most laborious chores. This along with my method of downloading bundles of music at a time, caused me to organize playlists which must be synced with through itunes. It would clear my library, only to re-upload the same songs taking about an hour each time. This, coupled with the decline in hard drive space made it difficult for me to effectively manage my music. With the release of spotify this all changed.
Spotify is a subscription based music streaming service. I pay the premium price of 9.99 a month, a an expense I found to be steep at first, mainly because "stealing" music was free. However the headaches associated it with it, coupled with my laziness, caused me to take a plunge into spotify. The application allows for offline playlists, songs that will sync to your devices and be allowed to be played without an online connection. (a lifesaver for the subway tunnels) Also, finding new music has been a painless experience, find a song, star it and it becomes apart of your playlist syncing within seconds. I have been a spotify user for a few months now, and realized that I use the app more than any other subscription based service( ie: netflix, hulu, etc.) and realized that it was worth the time investment. Also having the entire fleetwood mac library helps matters.Â
Calendar App Review
When asked to do an app review, I was initially concerned. As of the past few months, I have begun to grow increasingly detached from my iPhone. It was once an object of productivity and my lifeblood in order for me to keep track of my day to day. I used it for everything and anything. As I have grown increasingly distant from my iphone, I realized the applications that has caused me the most frustration are the applications which come standard with the iPhone. Applications such as Calendar, Mail, Weather, Notes and Safari have long been my favorite first party “apps.” I used these apps everyday for my work and in order to keep me in line. However, as my relationship with Apple slowly deteriorates, I found these applications to be at the forefront of my frustrations. I believe Apple’s application development has been lagging in relation to the forward advances Google and other third-party developers have been making. With each update of the iPhone, we are given advancements that I never saw to be a huge area of concern. From the Compass, Passbook, Newsstand, Reminders, and even the famed Siri, I have found these apps to be too situational and arbitrary to be implemented in one’s typical workflow. The app I chose to review in this instance is the one that leaves the most sour taste in my mouth, Calendar. This app, Calendar, came into my workflow rotation at the beginning of college. I had found keeping track of group meetings, club events and classes was easier to schedule and manage through the use of this app. I have never really utilized a day planner (I have a tendency to not write things down) and repeated events, such as classes, would be a chore to write into my planner each and every time. The app allowed for repeated events, iCal, iCloud and google calendar syncing. All these features and functions have worked greatly for me. However as time has gone on, the application has been receiving less attention while Apple continues to develop other applications. When viewing a calendar on a 3.5 inch screen, the ability to toggle view modes and scrolling should be a seamless and easy procedure, however the app does not make it an easy user experience. One of my main frustrations is the lack of scaling on the daily/weekly calendar view, and how it is toggled by the landscape orientation function. This could cause frustrations when browsing through a weekly view. Also the monthly view can only be viewed as cells, with a table beneath them. The functionality of ical is somewhat lacking in this port to the iphone. The app also feels & looks dated and clunky. List view is an absolute horror show and the push notifications can be annoying as it does not allow selective calendar push notifications. (If it does, it’s a lot more difficult to manage than I would like.)
