I do really want to think about that question of how can we consciously work to build environments where the kind of creative work and friendships we want flourish (and how can we name and address obstacles to that flourishing)
I've gathered my thoughts, I'm no longer on lunch break, I have a keyboard I can type on with more than just my thumbs, so here's my podfic-as-community-building-model-for-fandom thesis.
First I still want to acknowledge that a lot of what Iâm about to say has been said better in other places by people more knowledgeable than I am. For a look (listen) specifically at one fandom event that has been really incredible at community building, check out this hour and twenty-minute documentary.
Also, a pretty solid rebuttal to all of this, if you care to make it, is that podfic is a community of a couple thousand people, and comparisons to a megafandom like Heated Rivalry might be silly at best. And yet. She persisted.
Point 1: The process is the point
Iâll start here: structurally, podfic is different from fanfic and the incentives around it are different as well. There simply isnât the audience for podfic that exists for fanfic, even in mega fandoms, so youâll never get the same stats from a pod that youâd get from a similar fic.
This holds true for hits, kudos, and comments. (The most popular podfic in Heated Rivalry fandom has 80 comments, which is frankly unheard of for a podfic. In contrast, the chips are set to fall, the most commented on non-Wolfbird fic, has 17,922.) Further, unless people are streaming directly from AO3âwhich is one way to listen, but not the only way, and is not a very good way to listen to long podficsâpeople have to leave AO3 to listen, then come back and leave feedback. Engagement is much, much, much lower across the board, so the incentive is just not the same.
In an absence of feedback and stat-tracking, what's left? It's truly just the process of making podfic and the community you find there. And, for most podficcers, making podfic is a totally new process with a medium-high barrier to entry. We don't learn how to record and edit audio in most elementary school curricula, I don't think, whereas most of us have written a fictional story before we get started on fanfic. Beyond that, ao3 doesnât support audio filesâyou have to upload them somewhere else and link to them.
How do you do a podfic? You have to learn, beyond just knowing how to hit "post" and knowing that AO3 pasting into richtext sometimes makes paragraph breaks weird. You HAVE to ask (in a way that very few people ask about writing tips), and people are willing to answer. So there's a culture of mentorship, of humility, of asking questions and being good at receiving answers.

Point 2: There are pretty clear norms around podfic most of the timeâand those norms begin with "respect other fans"
Beyond just the rules of AO3 (e.g. âplease tag for major character death, etcâ), podficcers follow some pretty strong etiquette guidelines. They're not complicated, and in thinking through it, I really only came up with three pretty immutable ones:
Donât release podfics you havenât gotten permission for. Some people donât want other people interpreting their work in this way, and thatâs so understandable. You can record it and listen to it on your own, or share it in a walled garden, but don't post it publicly to AO3 without the author's permission. This can come in the form of a blanket permission statement or a direct question to the author.
Always link the podfic back to the original work. Often, you'll see people also encouraging listeners to click on the original work and be sure to leave kudos and comments for the original author.
If someone doesn't want their voice to be publicly available, lock the work. Even if it's a multivoice, and even if it's just a tiny bit.
These norms don't really exist in other fandom spaces. We can try to create them ("comment if you liked the fic!" "lock your RPF of living people!" etc.), but they're not given the same gravity as podficcers do.
Point 3: community-centric events are a huge part of the experience of podfic
So! When faced with a pastime where there is a barrier to entry, a built-in lower interaction threshold, AND a necessary interaction and respect for with other fans, youâve basically got two options. Either podfics are the purview of a dedicated few who love audio editing for the love of the game, or you grow the community.
Luckily, this is set up for community-building. There are people who need to ask for expertise and people who can provide it, and thereâs already a culture of talking to other fans.
in the case of podficcing, some really dedicated and talented people have taken on the mantle of creating events that highlight and support community-building. The biggest(?) of these is @voiceteam, which is basically a creative scavenger hunt event. For a month, people join teams to complete a series of challenges set by a mod team, each one of which is worth points. Everyone who participated gets points, so working together is key. The challenges range from âencourage authors from to create a blanket permission statement" to âlisten to podfic while drawingâ to âcreate a closet cosplay of a character as you listen to podfic.â Of course, there are a bunch of challenges about recording and posting podfic, but, crucially, you donât have to be a podficcer to participate in VoiceTeam.
Podtogether is another unique podfic event that pairs authors and podficcers together to create a new work specifically for podficcing. Thereâs an element of community baked in.
Most podfic events have listening parties associated with them, where people listen to the same podfics and chat about them on discord in a liveblog sort of situation.
Some of these things aren't transferable into a writer/reader space, but I could see things that are. The biggest Heated Rivalry event so far has been Mean Dom Ilya week (I think), and that one just seems, like, custom-built to ragebait. What if there were events like "Rookie Year" where first-time writers are paired with a team of veterans to workshop stories? Or an "Ilya Rozanov vs. the media" special where people build a collection of ESL stories and help each other out while writing them, discussing some of the challenges that come from writing in a second language?
Okay, so what can fandom as a whole learn from podficcing? Some things are maybe not transferable; some of this only works because the community is a few thousand fans and not millions. Some things are up to individual fans to choose as opposed to structural innovations in fan spaces (curating your own space vs curating fandom in general). But!
An intentional focus on community, collaboration, and creativity over statistics. I honestly donât know how to create more of this, but I noticed that one of the things that made Wolfbird (a fic that has largely been revealed as prompted rather than written) so enticing and beloved was the âbookclubâ nature of the comments. The prompter added bookclub-style questions to the end of every chapter that encouraged people to talk to each other and share ideas about the story. I also think that the allure of statistics are a major driver of AI-promoted fics (I am not immune to line-go-up).
Creating community norms around fanfiction, and having mature ways to discuss them. I realize that this wonât work across the board, but itâs no secret that one of the biggest success factors in VoiceTeam has been the leadership of klb, a fan who is a teacher of young children. Sometimes fans need to be told that the community norms are different than how theyâve been acting, and I believe in my heart of hearts that we can all be adults about it.
Events? as outlined above.
Focusing on the process of writing through things like enjoying not!fic. This is something I DO see in fandom, through blog posts and comments and different things. In podfic spaces people will get on a discord call, record it, and just have a fun time building out ideas. Itâs a paper dolls playtime! Have fun with it! It will never get you notoriety, but thatâs not the point.
Working intentionally collaboratively. One of the great things about multivoices is the notion of working together on something, sometimes even at the same time! Maybe having writing sprints with friends and then discussing what you write could work? Maybe reading something together and talking about it? I don't know if this could be a larger structure in a discord or something?
Being willing to put something kind of silly and shitty out into the world. This is a hallmark of voice team. Maybe you donât post your weird song about how much fun youâre having on AO3, but itâs fun to show it to friends or teammates! Define your own fandom experience outside of statistics!
In conclusion, I'm not sure how to do this on a large scale in a megafandom. It might not be possible! But I think, with intentionality, we can have some of the original fandom spaces of community. Also everyone should consider signing up for a podfic event.
This has to be phrased very gently, and I'm not confident I'm going to succeed.
The most important aspect of RGU, to me, as a story that centers on grooming specifically, is that it does not shy away from the fact that its victims can "enjoy" many individual moments of the process. The entire point of grooming is to make the victim okay with what is happening, to convince them that this is what they want too. When grooming is successful, they do, even if their feelings change later with more awareness. It's normal to be curious about and enjoy eroticism as a young person, but abusers will take advantage of that. They will try to convince you that your desires are the same as their desires.
Its so important because this aspect is weaponized against victims by those who should be helping them as well as the groomer themself. It's why Anthy is a "witch" according to the world. Utena tells Anthy that for a moment she felt betrayed by her, as if they were rival women competing for the same man. Akio tells Utena she's just as bad as him because she didn't reject his advances. Akio tells Utena that this is what Anthy *wants.*
Countless young people have been successfuly labeled as "obsessive" or "sex-crazed" and forced to take the blame while their abusers live freely. Countless young people have been convinced that is who they are because they didn't hate every single moment spent with their abuser.
It means a lot to me that RGU acknowledges this aspect. How the narrative doesnt hold victims to some absurd standard of spiritual purity for them to be deserving of sympathy.
