as someone who used to exclusively read WFA and fanfics: that is categorically false.

DC comics WANTS new readers to be able to buy their comics without having to read up on all of the continuities or start reading from the very beginning. im not saying that the continuities aren’t confusing, im saying that they DONT MATTER 90% of the time. especially if you’re reading a self-contained series like Batman and Robin: Year One or Batman: The Dark Knight. most comics are written so that anybody can pick them up with minimal confusion.

and your goal shouldn’t be to read every comic published on a character so that you can create some “perfect” aggregate of their personality. you can find some top tier recommendations on the DC wiki for almost any mainstream character.

also if you’re wondering why you would want to read the comics at all, it really boils down to two things for me 1) reading professional writer’s work will make you a better writer and 2) comics are fun to read! seriously, there’s something for everyone. the og young justice comics are hilarious, the new52 aquaman series is full of political intrigue, Gotham: Year One is a classic noir detective story, etc etc.
