Here is what the backside looks like. OP notes this takes more fabric than paper piecing, but that excess fabric makes it already triple-layered. Besides not needing backing fabric, I don't think you'd need batting for this quilt at all. It's already thick and soft just from folding all that fabric into a hexagon.

Each hexagon begins as a 6" circle. camelscrafts does this by creating a paper template using a compass. According to the video, a 6" circle will create a hexagon that is 2.5 inches tall.

These hexagons are hand-sewn. Thread the needle.

With the fabric right side facing, find the center of the circle by folding it in half right sides together, then folding it in half again (wrong sides are facing). The top of the triangle shape is the center of the fabric circle.

Make a small stitch into the center of the fabric. The wrong side is still facing.

Unfold the circle. There will be a small stitch in the center.

Now the hexagon is created by folding the circle into itself: Take the needle to one of the edges of the fabric (it doesn't matter which one). Pull the needle through and pull the thread tight. This will fold down the fabric and create an edge of the hexagon. Crease the fold with your finger.

This fold has two corners, one at the top and one at the bottom. Put the needle into one of the corners and pull the thread taut. This will create another fold.

Continue this going around the circle until all of it is folded down, creating the hexagon. camelscrafts notes that the last corner pulled in may be a little bit "wonky" (no precise point in the corner) if the corners were not done precisely. However, that corner is pulled into the back, so is not visible from the front.

The hexagon is now formed. Sew around the folds in the middle of the circle to hold the folds in place. Tie off and cut the thread.

Eridians don't thermoregulate like humans do, so there would be no physical temperature-related need for them to wear clothes like people do. But necessary for health or not, Eridians still have a reason: culture. They have cultural hangups that might encourage clothing in social settings.

Eating is gross! Sounds related to eating are probably considered gross. With very sensitive hearing, soundproofing is really, really important. Their houses are soundproofed for privacy. Why would they not try to minimize body sounds with a layer of sound insulating fabric? There's no other reason to have a sweater on when you don't sweat besides having another layer between your nasty organic processes and the auricles of your innocent coworker, so you do that to be part of polite society.

Without knowing much about non-Eridian life on Erid, it's hard to say what they might have started making textiles from. Humans used animal skins & hair and plant fibers. It's unknown what kind of plant analogues exist on Erid, just that there's nothing quite like Earth plants. So perhaps their clothing came from processed animal byproducts-soft inner tissues dried or tanned into sheets, bones or shells crushed into powder and 'glued' into fibers with protein-based adhesives, or melted-in-geothermal heat (no fire, remember!) soft, low melting point metals processed into thin fillaments and pulled or braided into 'yarn' and knit or woven into cloth, with added minerals to maximize soundproofing added as their materials science advanced.

Eridian cloaca are closed and covered by some part of their exoskeleton when not in use. The outermost part closes and seals up like a wound does after they are done excreting/eating/mating/what have you. So why would they need to cover it if they seal themselves naturally?

Well, does any biological process work 100% perfect 100% of the time?

Maybe clothing didn't evolve as a purely social thing. Maybe clothing was, at first, an attempt by ancient Eridians to help protect their biggest weak spot from diseases. Like face masks but for your ass. Silver or Copper thread might be used due to their antimicrobial properties, or gold/zinc-nanoparticulate alloys once their science got there.

Plus, having another protective layer over your one and only Extremely Extremely EXTREMELY vulnerable opening would also be, if nothing else, at least a psychological relief to some. Like underwear for people. It's not really doing anything huge to protect you, and on humans it's to separate your sweat and body fluids from getting on your clothes so I KNOW it's different, but given a choice between meeting someone naked vs with just a pair of underwear on, you'd likely feel more secure the second choice instead of having your butthole out and exposed, right? (don't actually tell me.)

I’ll tell you what I look for in a fic rec list and then we’ll see what everyone else thinks is good :)

all one fandom, and if it’s shippy then all the same ship

titles of the fic link over to AO3

include the rating of the fics and a brief description (or the reason why you like it)

tag the authors so they know they’ve been rec’d

I’ve definitely seen fic rec lists with a specific theme to them as well, for example “[ship] hurt/comfort recs” but I’m personally good with just the description and picking from there. 

All one fandom is good, but it doesn’t need to be all one ship. I don’t have anything against multifandom rec lists, but the odds of me being familiar with multiple fandoms on them are slim. The important thing is to be clear about the rec list’s theme before you actually list the recs themselves (e.g. random works I liked, coffee shop AUs in small fandoms, m/m slash in Specific Fandom, etc).

The reason you like it, or the reason you think other people should read it, is absolutely 100% necessary, and ideally it consists of at least a couple sentences (unless it’s a 100-word drabble you’re reccing). Without this, and especially if I don’t know anything about your taste in fic, it’s not any different than skimming a work listing.

If there’s something that you had to overlook while reading the fic, or something that made you hesitate to rec it, mention it! If I know the reccer would usually consider a lack of empty space between paragraphs a dealbreaker, I might be willing to give the fic a go despite the fact bad paragraph spacing is usually also a dealbreaker for me. But if I just click on a link and find a wall of text, I’ll probably back button from not just the work, but possibly the rec list as well.

I agree that single-fandom (or theme) blogs are more preferable to find, but think about what you want to run also. I wanted a place to archive all my favourite works, and I definitely don't have the energy for multiple blogs so this blog is multifandom. It's not for you (random folk on tumblr) it's for me (person having fun making the blog)

similarly, think about the maximum amount of effort you can spend on the task and still complete it. It would be nice to create a highly polished blog with a written summary and full tags and clear themeing, but that is actually a lot of work!

I've gone with a bullet point summary of author, rating, fandom, ship and then my own thoughts. You can check out the about pages for more information on how I'm organized.

I disagree strongly on tagging the author for a couple reasons - for one, you then have to go through the effort of finding the author (do yourself a favour and avoid giving yourself additional work)

also because as sarking mentioned, it's good to bring up both flaws and personal taste in a rec that may end up being very rude to mention to an author. If I'm reccing you something with the caveat that I really don't like how [important side character] was handled, it would be super rude to tag the author!

Additionally:

Think about longevity! I publish one rec a day through my queue, which means I don't have a lot published yet, but also means my queue is very full and I can chillax between doing a few recs in a row

if you are doing a specific fandom or ship rec blog, it is entirely possible to actually run out of good fic. Don't rush to publish a whole bunch of works just to keep your blog from looking empty! it'll fill up!

tags are your friend, but they can also be your enemy. Don't go overboard on keeping things organized - again! keep your work manageable!

Which is deeply unhelpful when you're trying to process#a relationship in which that sort of thing happened in ways you're almost certain were genuine expressions of emotion.#That doesn't make them better. Literally it does not make anything about the situation better at all.#But it's just. Like. This person hurt you because they were trying so viciously hard to meet their own emotional needs#and everything that happened to you is basically.... collateral damage. From that.

#Of course it's compounded when people have structural forms of social power that modulate the limits of how far they can go without#consequences. And when they've learned across many domains of their life how much they can accomplish materially#by being a bully. Of course people are going to bring that into interpersonal relationships as well#And when it fails to accomplish their goals in those relationships - goals that may also be unexamined or willfully denial -#it spirals.
