If it’s not a AU and it’s plausible she would still be alive in your timeline…just say where she is! Just 1 line even.

For instance, I just read a great fic but the whole time I was thinking “where is Anya?”

The premise is that Shane and Ilya go to the cottage after their first season together with the Centaurs to recover and reconnect. They’re there for a month or so ….but the author never mentions Anya…at all.

Ilya blasts ‘baby by me’ by 50 cent as loud as he can with the windows down in his obnoxious orange Lotus Emira, incredibly proud of his virility, while Shane rolls his eyes from the passenger seat, tries not to smile (see: fails) at his ridiculous husband while wincing at music volume… but doesn’t touch the speaker dial the whole way home.
