Is Indian Feminism asking the right questions?
India is majorly patriarchal in nature. Culturally, we respect women and our myths teach us about the Great Wars that happened when a woman is disrespected. Unlike the West, which is now partially patriarchal, Indian women in workforce, education, and in terms of literacy rates have very low numbers. Indian woman, when married is considered to take care of the family and serve their needs, while the man typically earns. This has been changing and now we see many women enter workforce in STEM fields, though the admissions of women into these are less than 30%. Women are still expected to take care of the domestic chores, despite them having full time jobs.
We’ve seen Feminism on the rise in India. Though the gist is pretty clear, we derive it from the Western and a lot of us are confused as to what we want now. In the process of identifying our position in society and opening up the minds to understand this newfound system, we are losing ourselves. In the process of proving that we are no less than men, some of us are becoming men and often hating them. Psuedo-feminism is what occupies the brains of many of the women we find speaking up in the name of “Feminism”. They rant about mansplaining, and objectification, slut shaming etc, while the real problem lies in the most rural areas where women don’t understand the importance of proper sanitation or sanitary pads. We have problem of low literacy rate among women especially in the rural areas. We need women empowerment, we need the literacy gap to reduce, because every child has a right to education,to learn, to grow freely. Thinking about the problem of wage gap, we should not complain there is no equality in workforce, rather try to understand the gender gap in education system. And clearly Empowerment does the job here.
PS: It is my first blog, and I wrote it in a bit of hurry. I am very open to constructive criticism and would love to hear your opinions on the topic. Please read and provide me feedback.
