The Past

The Beginning

Many years ago, so long that no records exist, Humans and Monsters lived on the surface. Coexistence was peaceful, and although both races lived among themselves, there was something that united them: Trade.

The Humans worked the land, persevering and dedicated; nothing could stop them thanks to their natural determination. The Monsters admired them for their skill.

The Monsters were a merchant community, generous and gentle, specializing in selling products produced and perfected by their natural magic. Humans were fascinated by their power.

Humanity was always more numerous, constantly growing, constantly expanding. In contrast, the monsters were a stable, long-lived, and slowly growing race.

The balance was broken when what was once admiration and respect transformed into envy and greed.

The Great War

Abrupt and violent, the battle was not difficult for those experienced in managing an army. Unfortunately, the monsters had always been peaceful, dedicated to their work, and therefore posed no real threat to the human troops.

The then-young king of the monsters decided to relinquish material possessions to avoid the massacre of his people, but when the humans demanded the secrets of monster magic, it was impossible to appease them. How do you give something so fundamental to your very existence, something as natural as breathing?

With no way to make them understand, the victors decided to exile the losers from the surface, sealing them underground with their own magic and thus erasing their existence.

The monsters began their existence underground with the remnants of what had once been their prosperous kingdom...And a disease that slowly corrupted the souls of almost everyone: GREED

The Present

*Given that much of the information about the state of the Underground is explained in the characters' stories, I will focus more on the surface in this section.

"When the seventh human fell into the underground, the amount of time that had passed since its predecessor had been so long, that the monsters had already lost all hope that it would happen. Many didn't even remember what a human looked like, only those in charge of the kingdom did, and even so, the resentment towards their rule from the kingdom folk was so strong, that the seventh human could go a long time without making their presence know."

Why did it take so long for a new human to fall into the Underground again?

The Purplish's Surface is a human world that survived a great nuclear war that almost destroyed everything but was stopped in time.

Humanity had its wake-up call and came together at the last moment to stop the massacre, but they were not spared the effects of the environmental damage it caused. A problem with energy sources cut off communication between sectors, stopped the known technological advance and large cities had to close to try to withstand the climate change. A strong nuclear winter hit the surface and for a long time the survivors had to learn to produce what they needed, so by the time the climate stabilized, the new generations in some way prepared to start rebuilding, just on a smaller scale than the previous globalization that caused the war.

By the time of Wallet's (the kid) generation, humanity is scattered in large closed and self-sufficient communities in different sectors that were not directly destroyed by war. Resources are finally beginning to increase and little by little different types of energy that had been lost with the unstable climate are being recovered.

Mt Ebott was one of the places that, being geographically isolated, was able to shelter a large number of survivors, especially due to the rapid action of those in command of the nearby city in times of war. The nature reserve surrounding the mountain survived the great winter and now that the weather is improving, the community is slowly beginning to use its resources to improve living conditions. Wallet is part of the large community of humans settled at the foot of the mountain that numbers a few hundreds and growing by then. Recycling the materials that are at hand and producing the resources that can be obtained from the earth is the priority, so everyone works to produce something and exchange it for what they need.

As long as you can work, you will always have something to trade.

Mt Ebott Community vs The Kid

The community has a "Mayor" like figure in charge, who is basically elected to supervise that things are kept in order and as one who helps resolve conflicts as the "impartial" third party.

The current Mayor knows quite well how little his people appreciate the kid's presence. An orphaned child who is too restless for their own good, who has been assigned to different sectors and does not seem to fit into any of them.

Kudos to the Mayor, he still tries to make it work because the kid is...literally a child, but people are people and when he is not looking, some decided to send the kid on a "mission" to find something up the mountain.

Something that makes Wallet (the kid) a little different from the other kids before them is that... basically, they didn't "fell", they properly jumped down, but not for the reasons you may think.

They didn't expect to die, although of course it could had happen, but it was more of an act of careless bravery than a suicidal act (and let's be honest, with this child it's a little difficult to separate both ideas knowing later how they walked the Underground).

The Past

The Beginning

Over time, both communities had formed a great friendship, supporting each other and coming to the aid of one another in the face of any adversity. Resources, information, and land were happily shared.

Monsters specializing in the art of nourishing and curing any ailment, while Humans excelled in their inventiveness and constant adaptability.

Humanity was always more numerous tho, constantly growing, constantly expanding. In contrast, monsters kind were a stable, long-lived, and slowly growing race.

It was this longevity that slowly caused strangeness and finally rejection with each new human generation that was born. This slowly destroyed the bond that united both races for decades, and the balance was broken with a violent act of betrayal.

The Great War

The anti-monster campaign quickly infected the human community; what was once common and familiar became strange and corrupt. An unnatural existence, and therefore a latent danger that had to be eliminated.

While for one side this was a great battle, the losing side never offered resistance. Rooted in their pacifism and unable to comprehend the betrayal of those who had been friends for so long, the monsters surrender was decided once the threat escalated into acts of violence against their kind.

The then-young king did his best to restore peace, the return of the coexistence that had existed for so long. But humanity demanded the impossible: a cure for the natural passage of time, something to prevent the worst evil of all, aging.

The monsters were imprisoned underground, labeled aberrations and demons by those who had once been their allies. Even so, the community remained, working together to make this new reality their home…until the fateful day that destroyed everything.

The Present

Why did it take so long for a new human to fall into the Underground again?

The Reddish Surface is a human world that suffered a great nuclear war, so catastrophic and devastating, that it almost wiped out humanity. Those in charge made the worst decisions and by the time they realized their mistake, it was too late.

Its subsequent effects ended up reducing the population so much that few humans are still around. Climate changes, diseases, radiation, it took years before things stabilized and this led to what can only be described as a natural revolution.

By the time of Shaky's (the kid) generation, humanity is isolated in small groups, living in a very primitive way and in a constant state of alert because nature recovered almost all of its territory with their absence. Flora and Fauna adapted faster than the survivors, so almost all urban constructions are covered with plants and large animals roam the surface.

Mt Ebott was one of the places that, being geographically isolated, wasn't completely destroyed by attacks, but by the subsequent effects. The survivors decided to leave once to look for resources, only to end up returning when they saw the disaster in the big cities.

Without electricity, communication with the outside world became impossible. Almost all knowledge was lost without the proper people to teach it, only few knew how to survive off the land and "Human History" started to fade with each generation. But humans adapt and survive the worst conditions, just in this case, without much wisdom other than the instinct to survive.

Mt Ebott survivors & the kid

The kid is part of a small community that barely exceed one hundred humans living at the foot of the mountain. They are what remains of what was once the city that existed there and they live in deplorable conditions. It's very likely that they would have disappeared if the accident that led the kid to meet the monsters had not happened.

Their reason for ending up in the Underground? They were probably fleeing from some wild animal that found them unprepared, ended up by the cave by accident and entered seeking refuge.

We all know that they ended up falling down.

Dressed in rags, long, disheveled hair, malnourished and almost incoherent when speaking.
