Ok, so the whole thing is clearly affecting both Joy and Mel more than either would like to admit. Joy and Mel were specialised daycare attendants with a difficult job, working in a childrenβs hospice. It mustβve been difficult for both of them, constantly watching poor souls being taken far too early, even if thatβs the care they were programmed for. It makes sense that they used to be close; not just as a Sun and Moon, but to lean on each other, a shoulder to cry on when things get too much or after a particularly hard case.
With us getting a bit of insight into Melβs side of the story, a few episodes back, in her therapy session with Carmine. Joy has forgiven Mel and seems to long for that strong connection they once had. Mel on the other hand.. she resents Joy. Itβs clear that Mel holds a lot of anger and pent-up emotions towards her. Joy saw her die. She thought Mel was dead. Mel said that Joy tried to murder her. Thereβs definitely not something thatβs quite adding up here..Β
Joy talks fondly of Mel, of how she was always so good with the children, a beautiful singer who would hum lullabies to children in their last moments. We hear from Joy that problems started post-Melβs routine maintenance- she came back irritable, and it only got worse as time went on. Maybe Mel was developing a killcode? Or maybe her code was tampered with? Or even their version of the Vanny Virus? IF Mel is saying that Joy tried to murder her, did she do this of her own volition? Or was Joy being controlled, and thatβs why her perspective of said events is so different to Melβs?
Though there is a clear level of grudge and blame on Melβs part, Iβd theorise that neither of them is at fault per se; it feels like there is something greater at play here that we have yet to discover. Their actions and decisions may have been manipulated without their knowledge. However, itβs still early days, and thereβs much of the story still left uncovered. Itβll be interesting to see what direction this goes in!
Iβd also like to briefly touch on how Sun acted in this episode. Sun is clearly struggling to separate his own experiences and emotions from those of other individuals, just as Dahlia said. Itβs a very natural response which comes from the best intentions of wanting to help Joy and alleviate her pain, but inadvertently ended up being harmful. I agree with Dahlia in that Sun needs to learn when it is best to show empathy and also avoid getting sucked into what other people are experiencing. Yes, they are all Suns but with very different experiences and relationships with their Moons. Itβll be interesting to see the future challenges Sun faces regarding this and how heβll learn through trial and error.
ALSO, mandatory Dahlia yap as itβs been SO long since Iβve seen him (25 days to be exact), so I feel obligated to do a bit of analysis with him.

Itβs implied that Dahlia may actually teach or, at the very least, is associated with the school at the Sun Sanctuary? That's interesting.. I wonder if he's met Dazzle at the school. She's been eager to improve and better understand her powers. Dahlia may have some good resources for her. Idk, I feel like heβd be good with the little ones. In spite of his blunt nature, I feel like that would soften around kids. Maybe because he sees how carefree and innocent kids are.. oh to go back to those days.. before the war..

So Moon hung out with Andromeda, bossed everyone around, casually insulted everyone who wasn't Andromeda and used his position of power to bully everyone to leave them alone.

Also I think Mars would have a short circuit if he found out how Sun and Moon treat eachother as siblings.
You see, Moon is difficult for me as someone who quite enjoys asshole and jerk characters by quite a lot.
But I think I figured out what separates Moon from characters like Lars from Steven Universe or Jax from Amazing Digital Circus or heck even something more adult like Bojack Horseman or Blitzo from Helluva Boss. Or even Clark from Backrooms movie.
A lot of their asshole and bullying behavior is deeply rooted in their insecurities and issues with their self image. Which makes them fun to dissect and go over like a bug under a microscope for me. I love analyzing jerk characters for fun and going into the psychology of why they are this way and why they do the things they do. Most of the time it is avoidant behavior patterns to protect themselves and it is satisfying to see these people get better or spiral down a dark path with no hope because they didn't change their ways. It's fun for me either way to see these types of characters still have a little bit of spice to them even if they get redeeemed.
And while, yes. Moon is deeply insecure and hates himself and feels a lot of guilt for things he has done in the past...... This has zero connection to his behavior of treating people rudely.
He doesn't insult or bully people to hide insecurities about himself or he doesn't push people away cus he feels he's a piece of shit who doesn't deserve it.
He doesn't do it to protect himself, or his fragile ego.
He doesn't tell people off constantly because this is connected to some deep insecurities he has as a person.
He is a jerk because he hates people and he thinks his beratement is funny.
It's ironic because while I know Reed hates Jax. Their characterization of Moon is kinda like if you took Jax's "I'm the funny one" and "you are my playthings" speech at face value, missing all the subtly of the character and that is the character verbatim and not the mask.
Moon is just a rude asshole not for any character motivation.
But because he can be.
Because he wants to be Rick Sanchez so bad.
And I'm sorry but I find that way less compelling.

Eclipse is never revived in this AU, nor does Ruin ever come to their dimension. So, no, it wouldn't happen- not then, at least.
However, it will happen later on as a different threat that arises. That's a card I've been holding close to my chest since the initial drafts of this AU though, so don't expect me to spill the beans any time soon :)
After that, and as they heal from it, I think I'll probably have them get MLP bracelets :3 might give one to every family member β¨ Earth/Terra will def get everyone shirts, though if everyone wears them is debatable lol
